Let me know if you figure out a way to minimize shake. I tried riding doubles with mine and the shaking was pretty bad but super solid from a boat or standing in the water.

a tip for shooting riding doubles with the flipcam

strap the camera to your chest. directly in the in the center of your chest. as long as the water is pretty smooth and u dont bounce around the footage should be smooth as buttery water

Which is better, the FlipCam HD or the GoPro HD Camera. Both are around the same price.

"Which model is that?"

The Flip Ultra and Ultra HD are the only models made to fit in the waterproof case.

Here's a quick edit we threw together testing out our waterproof case:

The screenshots from this thing are unbelievable.

Cannot wait to get the new GoPro HD camera when it comes out.

Mitch Langfield had a an SD one at the projects that we played around with a while ago. I thought it was rad, but it needed to be HD for my workflow.

Looking forward to seeing how the 7D video holds up in a water housing from the tube as well.
Old     (ghettofab)      Join Date: Aug 2008       10-29-2009, 5:45 AM Reply
7d < gopro hd for water situations. 300 bucks and the its small size you can mount it anywhere. i would mount it on my head for shooting tube stuff.
Old     (sideswipeproductions)      Join Date: Jun 2009       10-29-2009, 6:01 AM Reply
Yeah, I just feel like the perspective the GoPro gives can get old if it's used too much. I only wanna use it sparingly in my edits.

It'll all depend on how the 7D sensor handles all the motion from a tube though. Hopefully it goes ok so I can mix it up between the two.

true dat.

i just think u could find a new angle every single time u film with the gopro
Old     (watersun)      Join Date: Jun 2009       10-29-2009, 6:09 AM Reply
What is the 7D? Is that the FlipCam? Sorry, not up to speed on these things.
Old     (ghettofab)      Join Date: Aug 2008       10-29-2009, 6:15 AM Reply
Canon 7d. its a dslr think its somewhere around 2,000 dollars.

Oh, ha, gotcha. So which is better between the FlipCam and the GoPro camera?
Old     (ghettofab)      Join Date: Aug 2008       10-29-2009, 6:37 AM Reply
seems like the gopro HD is smaller and has alot more mounting options
Old     (xbones)      Join Date: Mar 2007       10-29-2009, 6:43 AM Reply
Norbi... link is down brodeo... and I wanna see how that cam works with some quality editing!

I've been on the verge of buying a Canon HV30 but in all honesty with these little HD capable cams coming out its hard to justify the extra $400.

Seems like the biggest issue is the shake in the footage from chase and what not... I would think you could come up with some kind of weighted contraption to stabilize the shot though... Hmmmm what to do?
Old     (wakeworld)      Join Date: Jan 1997       10-29-2009, 9:00 AM Reply
The lack of shake on that GoPro in the sample video is amazing. I wonder if that's raw footage of if it's been "de-shaken" with software. I can't believe how smooth it is on the BMX jumps!
Old     (watersun)      Join Date: Jun 2009       10-29-2009, 9:08 AM Reply
Ya, I was actually just watching the videos too and I couldn't believe how smoothe the video was. If that is raw footage, then I think the GoPro would be the way to go. A lot of the reviews I read on the FlipCam said that the video was shaky when moving or when panning really quick.
Old     (romes)      Join Date: Sep 2006       10-29-2009, 9:51 AM Reply
it is shakey as hell...thats one thing i've noticed while using ours for basically an entire summer. has anyone edited out the shake yet?

the waterproof housing is awesome..BUT it sinks like a rock, what are ya'll doing about that?

we've used it for just ab everything we do. wake, messing around, winching, etc...its pretty dope...

Some surfers have been rocking the Go Pro and holding them in their hands.

Check out the footage here:

http://chasingchalk.com/2009/09/10/hippo-n-boys-pumping-straddie/

and here:

<- This one is particularly sick.

slo-mo seems to be the way to go, based on the shake.

i'll post up a little vid we've put together using our flip a little later tonite...

jr,

So, when you say "it" is shaky, you are referring to the FlipCam, correct?
Old     (romes)      Join Date: Sep 2006       10-29-2009, 10:51 AM Reply
yea. i'm sure some people have steadier hands than others but i think the picture is shakey no matter who's using it.

we use the ultraDH....

we also just got their newest one the Mino...its SOOO small
Old     (xbones)      Join Date: Mar 2007       10-29-2009, 10:52 AM Reply
So am I correct that the Go Pro HD cam isn't released yet? Or is it the one on the site that has Helmet, motorsports or surf HERO?

i dont think its out yet...they're only taking pre-orders...

i messed with that thing last year at IcerAir and it's super sick. it wasnt HD then so i didnt pay it much mind but now that they're making it in HD i might have to take a closer look...
Old     (liquidmx)      Join Date: Jun 2005       10-29-2009, 12:26 PM Reply
I did a quick search on Vimeo for Go Pro looking for the most amateur video I could find to get an idea of the shake. Motocross + amateur riders = the most bumpy situation I could think of. I think this one pretty much sums it up...I will def be looking into this!

Anyone know how much "footage" you can take with the GoPro HD?
Old     (norcalbordr)      Join Date: Feb 2006       10-29-2009, 1:58 PM Reply
Jessica, how did you get the screenshot to come out so clear? I have the Flip Ultra HD and besides the super shakyness, I can't get a screenshot from riding to come out clear at all, check out my profile pic. That was filmed using my Flip HD and that screenshot was what I got from the video that was taken.

Are you guys using the Flip editing software that comes with or are you using another program to edit videos and make screenshots?
Old     (norbiv)      Join Date: May 2009       10-29-2009, 5:24 PM Reply
I think the flipcam has better resolution and memory and the go pro has wider lens and is more for like a POV of the rider. while the flipcam is more cinematographic but still compact obviously.
I think.

Im using finalcut to edit and finder to import footie.
Old    wakejjboard12            10-29-2009, 7:44 PM Reply
Jason,
I use movie maker unfortunately. I never have problems with shaking except when riding doubles. The screenshots are super clear for me. If you are using the Flip editing software that could be your problem. That software is useless.

Norbi,
When can we see your Flip footy? It will be nice to see what my camera is capable of with someone who can actually edit lol

Does anyone know if you can take some screen shots (every 3rd or 4th frame or so) and make a sequence shot out of them? I have been looking at upgrading my digital SLR to one with 6 or so fps to produce a better sequence photo of tricks or whatever.

Would love to see some footage you guys have as soon as it's available. I am trying to decide between the GoPro HD or FlipCam HD and if the price difference is worth it.

It will all depend what you are wanting to shoot. The GoPro is a great POV cam allowing you to get some great shots without worrying about holding a cam and " getting the shot". The Flip is a great cam that allows you to actually shoot with it because you can frame up your shot using the builtin screen. You can get a little more creative with it.

Both cams are great, as ive used/own em both.

true.
Im finishing up my Aaron Rathy VS. Phillip Soven video in a couple of days, I still have some aftereffects work that needs to be done but it`ll have footage from the flipcam hd , sony hdr-fx7 (my main camera) and some doubles footie with the waterproof case for the flipcam hd with surprisingly good audio even through the case!
u can hear the rails and everything.
should be cool when its done.

I love it how the technology is at this point. We can capture anything in amazing qualities. whats next ? idk but I`m Stoked!

haha

Has anyone checked out the new Kodak Zi8? It shoots not only 1080p at 30 fps, but also 720p at 30 fps and 60fps. The 60 fps would be more suited to shooting action shots as the playback wouldn't be as jerky. The main downside to me is it does not yet have a waterproof case made specifically for it. You would have to use a generic one, probably the bag type. Here is one of the reviews on it. http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/kodak-zi8-pocket-video/4505-6500_7-33740624.html

Hey everyone. My editing is horrible, but I picked up one of the HD flipcams the otherday and have been playing with it. Here is a short video from today which has some clips of me riding with the camera. Pretty stoked on my new toy for the winter! Now I just need to learn how to edit!!!
