A friend of mine has a boat with a four cylinder carbureted engine. He's going to be taking it to a lake that's about 7,000 feet higher in altitude than he normally runs it. He asked me if he needed to adjust the carb or prop and I didn't have an answer for him. What is the popular wisdom on this? Any help would be appreciated.

You can also advance the timing

A step or two leaner on the jets would be in order I believe since the air is thinner. Nor sure on the prop.

So he wouldn't get away with just leaving it as is?

Oh yeah it'll still run, it just wont be optimum. A little on the sluggish side. A slight lack of power feeling.

You lose 3% of your horse power every 1000ft above seas level. So he'll be running about 21% down from whatever he is used to. I run just about 6000ft and had to go to the acme 1235 to help make up the difference in power

Wouldn't it make more sense to adjust the carb than the prop? That way the engine will still run efficiently. Otherwise, you're just compensating for a poorly running engine, right? I guess it also depends on how easy/expensive it is to change carb jets vs. changing a prop.

Yeah, it's all price dirven, but you're going to lose power no matter what, even if you adjust the carb
