Whenever I spin I pass the handle under my butt...it works fine for 3's and ts 5's...but heelfives i can barely sneak around and anything more than that seems like this style of handle pass will make hard... and tips to break the habit?

I say roll with it. Go watch some video of Necrason pass it under his butt.

Grab an old handle and stick something heavy at the end of the 5 ft rope. Go out into your yard or a field where there is PLENTY of room and start passing that handle. Get the handle moving quick! like the rope should be parallel with the ground type fast. Then adjust your style of passing and build in the habit.

I had that habit, I feel your pain. It’s a good way to pass the handle spinning heel and toe blind but it does hinder you in frontside spinning.

DO what Matt said. There is an old Kyle Schmidt article in WBM where he says take an old handle attach a gallon milk jug full of sand to a bungee cord then to the handle. Practice passing as Matt describes, what's nice about this is once you have the milk jug rotating around you, you can start turning your body in the opposite direction to make the rotation even faster. It will help build the correct muscle memory.

I don’t really agree with Paul, yes Necrason does it but usually when he is spinning backside, think about how much trouble you say you are having getting a 5 around, you will never be able to get a 7 or 9 around like that.

Also, for me it was a two part problem, 1 I was passing low, and 2 I was dropping my back shoulder when I started to spin, so I had to pass low to stay on axis. Look at some video of yourself riding if you are dropping your back shoulder that is a major part of the problem.

Good luck hope this helps.

Check out this video, Colin puts on a spinning clinic at the end of the video, look at his shoulders on his flat spins they are totally square. There is a good example around 1:20 minutes in of him doing flat 7s off the dub. Also I do a toeside 5 switch ts 5 combo at 1:55 that is a good example as well.

I think passing the handle under your butt actually looks better, kinda gives it more style, esp on backside spins.
