Thoughts on subwoofer grille

I recently upgraded my sub from a Kicker 12L5 to a 12L7, and am thinking about putting a grille on it for protection. My sub box is under the dash facing directly at the driver. Do you think sub grilles affect sound at all? Any advise is greatly appreciated.

About the worst thing that a grill can affect is your toes if you are not careful...
