Dripless seal replacement - '08 Supra 22 SSV

Has anyone replaced there dripless shaft seal on a newer Supra? My '08 w/230 hours is beginning to leak and I want to have it repaired by a shop. I have called a couple local Indmar dealers and nobody will commit to a timeframe on labor. The part is $25 from OJ props, but labor time rates are coming in from 2-5 hours. I hate leaving my boat with someone with an open checkbook on repair times.

Just wanted to find out if anyone has done this and what length of time it took you (along with re-aligning the motor). And were there any major hangups?

2 hours is overly optimistic. You cannot predict half of what might cause trouble on the job. If you don't trust your mechanic, find a new one.

My brother owns a shop here in Portland he charges two hours to R and R a shaft seal engine alignment should be checked but not needed my friend just had his done he switched to the PSS system and it cost him $500 parts and labor................H

Dude.... maybe I am missing something, but that drip sounds like a warranty item. That boat has a 5 yr warranty on stuff like that.

I am looking into this right now, apparently it might be a "wear and tear" item that is not covered. I am assuming the worse case scenario, but hopefully the warranty will come through. The Marine industry warranties are difficult to understand, and most of the time manufacturers want you to go away rather than fix the item. I have heard this about numerous boat companies. Of course the dealer I purchased the boat from is no longer in business, so the next one up is a 2 hr tow..... they are dropping like flies in the Sacramento area.

I installed the OJ dripless shaft seal on my last boat (supra 21V). It is not that hard and took about 1.5 - 2 hrs. There is a good tutorial here http://www.skidim.blogspot.com/ .

Oh and good luck on that 5yr warranty, since that company offering it went out of business. So much for that :/

Hmm... I called seasafe this week and it appears its moving in the direction of them replacing the seal under warranty. The seasafe warranty covers gasket/seals in the driveshaft area. On your profile it says you have an "MB", possibly a different company than Skiers choic uses?

What company did you contact? and what year is your boat?

Travis , glad to see they are covering it.......you should insist on watching so you can see how easy it is to replace it as it is truly a maintenance item over the long term..imo

Doc, you are right... I just dont have the time right now. Hats off to Skiers Choice for stepping up to help with the replacement. Seasafe denied the repair, and SC offered to cover all the labor if I picked up the cost of the part. Repair will also come with a one year warranty which is nice. Thought this was a fair deal, especially in todays boat economy.
