Has anyone ocean surfed with a Landlock board? It seems possible in small wave weak surf conditions.

I surf a fair amount and while I'm no expert, I think it could be done, but I don't think it would make for a very good surf board. The fins are fiarly shallow in comparrison to most other surf boards not to mention it would be extremely difficult to catch a wave because it has such a thin profile, I can't really picture paddling out on it. But then again I ride an 8'4" so maybe someone with better short board skillz could give it a try. If you near the ocean, give it a shot, worst thing that happens is that it doesn't work.

also, the smaller the waves, the weaker the break, the bigger/more boyant the board you need. To use the landlock you'd need some pretty powerful waves, that are fairly big. For 1-5 feet you generally need a longboard like 8'+. Personally I don't think it would work, now if you could do a tow in then I think it makes it more possible, but the land lock is defenitly NOT made for the ocean.

Bess is correct, you need a board with adequate volume to hold up your weight. The landlock has neutral boyance because the speed of the boat drops you into the wave (wake). Just like some pro wakeboarders get pulled by jetski into the large Hawiian surf, and the can wakeboard on it without a handle.

I was at the Liquid Force offices not too long ago taking a peek at their future offerings for the wakesurf market. They have one model that is shaped like a regular surfboard by Jimmy Redmond and the guys say they take it down to the beach and use it for regular surfing. In fact, the local rep was pissed cuz he had just picked up a brand new board and he liked the way the LF wakesurf board performed better than his brand new surfboard!

The only problem with the Landlock for real surfing is it's not very buoyant for paddling in to waves. Once you drop in the thickness is irrelevant. At that point it’s all about planning surface. It has nothing to do with the size of the wave.

Blaine,
It also does not have a lease plug.
Did you have fun this weekend?
I had a blast.
Say hi to your son (he ripped all weekend long), and Loraine Bracco.
We have to stop bringing my wife to these competions.

Well you need a wave thats big enough/fast enough to get the surfer on plane. Have you ever tried to surf a short board in 2-5 foot week waves, trust me it doesn't work out to well, it can be done but if you want to spend an entire day out there and only catch 5 waves be my guest. The wae has to be strong enough to get you on plane, the smaller the board the less surface area the more power is needed.

I surf 2-5 ft mush, poop, slop of waves on a 5'6 fish and it works really good.
