Here is a pic of Tucker that I took a couple of weeks ago. Same dogue de bordeaux from earlier post. He is getting big and strong. My 80 pound daughter was lying on the kitchen floor holding his collar the other day. He saw his rawhide bone in the living room and took off. He ripped he across the floor like a winch pulling a rider.

That's awwesome. Both of my dogs hate the water, so they stay at home when we go out.
If I were to try that with either of them, my arms would be so scratched up I'd bleed out before I even got tension on the rope to get up. I swear with how they act they're cats in dog bodies.
I have a Yorkie Schnouzer that is 6 and a Shi-Tzu that is 4.

We've got 4 dogs: 2 English Bulldogs and 2 Boxers. Unfortunately the bulldogs can't come out with us because they both sink like a stone, even when wearing lifejackets. And our male boxer is notorious for jumping out of moving vehicles, so we don't want to run the risk of him jumping out of the front of the boat while underway and hitting him with the prop (my wife is a veterinarian and has actually seen this happen a couple of times on our lake). So our female boxer Gracie has pretty much been the only one who was able to come out on the boat with us, and unfortunately it looks like last year was her last season out with us . These were taken on one of our last trips out with her last season and she always loved going. But she's 12 now (ancient for a boxer) and her age is finally starting to show. We're not expecting her to make it to the start of this season, but if for some reason she does, we want to try to get her out one last time before it's too late. I'm gonna miss this old girl....

do any of you guys worry about your interior getting jacked from a toenail? I know its come up before and the consensus was that its not bad for vinyl. had a buddy tell me his lab poked a hole in a seat, he replaced it, it didn't match, had to do the whole boat deal.

the seats get conditioned after every trip to the lake. just wondering my interior is about 9/10 and will need some attention soon anyway, I just don't want to replace it immediately

You are asking a broad question. It really depends on the dog. I have a boxer/pit mix and a plott hound. They have out grown the boat cause of their hyperness and the fact that they love to swim. Which equates to them launching off the sundeck after a stick for no apparent reason. If you have a calm dog, it is fine. If you have dogs like mine, it is a different story. And to finish with a pic...I took it about an hour ago.

Yeah - I get some puncture holes sometimes... especially if someone says the B word (bee aye ell ell... don't say it!) We got some of these... they seem OK. Was really looking for something a little more heavy duty as these don't last long on terrain, but don't seem to bother my dog in any way.

I would be interested to see other solutions.

Yes some punctures. It's not near as bad as the truck doors though. The pleather doesn't hold up well when she stands up to look out window and play her car biting game. But, boat vinyl does hold up better, still find tears though. As is life, she means more than vinyl to me. Hell, gives me a reason to do a custom interior down the line right?

This makes lots of sense to me.

TX chris, do those work? Looks like a patience tester for the dog and for us but if it works I could be down

They work as long as they are not broken. What I mean by that is the whole, intact silicon nail cover is soft and turns a razor sharp, hard dog nail into something as soft as a bent elbow. But you have to inspect them after a run on dry ground. My dog broke through two of them after a couple of runs up a rocky hill. But I didn't notice it until I inspected them. They looked fine until I took a close look and saw her nail was poking through a tiny hole - rendering them useless. My dog weighs about 60 lbs and withholds nothing while playing fetch (she has knocked full grown men to the ground because they were in her way) - so they may last longer for other dogs.

Lucy doesn't mind me messing with her feet and has no concern over these pads on her claws. But she is a very agreeable pet (see pick below of her allowing my toddler to "play" with her with stuffed animals), so she may not be the norm, I don't know. I have a dachshund that won't let me even look at his feet, and I would not try this on him. If your dog can sit still to let you clean their muddy feet, I suspect you wouldn't have a problem applying these pads. They slip on pretty easily. It's maybe a 2 minute ordeal with a cooperative dog.

My preferred solution would be more resilient and removable - so I could just have them on her while we are on the water. Something like a silicon hot pad in thickness and in the shape of a pad-less glove (the opposite of a finger-less glove).

Oh, and there are a couple different brands - some cheaper in price and quality... but good inexpensive testers for the concept.

Before this, I made sure we ran on concrete/asphalt so her nails would be ground to round nubs (nothing dramatic, just removing the point through a natural filing). That also worked... it also kept me in shape. lol

TX chris, thanks for the info. Cleaning her feet isn't a huge deal and we can trim her nails, although we let Petsmart do it. I may pick up a cheap set just to try them out. Izzy gets walked at least a mile a day and the street is the best way to wear them down!
TN Jeeper, cool dog. Even cooler that your wife can surf that well

I can't imagine getting those caps on each toe... That's gotta be a nightmare

we went with these booties: Ultra-Paws-Durable-Dog-Boots

Our dogs don't really enjoy swimming (yet) so I don't know how swimming would go, but they work great for protecting the vinyl
