Trying to decide whether to upgrade my glass collection, or invest in the 7D.

Current bodies - 20 and 40D's
Lenses:
17-85 EFS
10-22 EFS
28-135 EF
70-200 2.8 IS

Looking at the 24-70L, also the 50 1.4, and the 17-40L, possibly the 24-105L - Not sure what it all would be yet, but pretty set on the 50.

Thoughts?

Always a tough call, I have the same camera set up as you (20D & 40D) lenses 400 5.6, 70-200 f/4, 28-135, nifity fifty 1.8 and for wide angle I have a Tamron 17-50 2.8, love this tammy, very sharp!!

I was saving up for a 300 2.8 but really wanted the 7D for the 18 megapixel and better ISO capabilities for shooting wildlife. I went back and forth for the last couple months, 7D arrives today

Get better glass. 5 years from now that 7D will be a dinosaur like your 20D is today, but a 24-70 will still be a great lens.

If you pick up a 24-70 or a 24-105, then you can sell the 17-85 and 28-135 and use that money to buy a 50. That will give you a FULL range of high end glass that will likely outlast the next few camera bodies that you upgrade to. IMO this is a better investment in the long term. AND if you decide to sell this stuff later, it will still have value to it.

Yeah, what Scott said is almost my exact set-up:

10-22
28-70 2.8
70-200 2.8
50 1.8(soon to be replaced with a 1.4)

I never find myself adjusting for lapses. You'll be glad you spent your money on glass.

Glass!

I agree with Scott's recommendation! Sell the cheaper glass to help fund the high-end glass and then never look back.

Use bing.com (before it dies on 7/30) and save around $75 on the following:

Canon 24-70 f2.8 L

B&H
Retail: $1309
With Bing: $1,282

Abes of Main: (9/10 on resellerratings)
Retail: $1,278.00
With Bing: $1,252

both offer free shipping on this lens!

50mm f/1.4

B&H
Retail: $345
With Bing: $338

Abes of Main: (9/10 on resellerratings)
Retail: $334.00
With Bing: $327

Save even bigger when buying a body using bing! Do you really need two bodies? Sell the 20D while you still can and if you don't need a second camera.. sell the 40D and get a canon 7D for only $1408 (vs. $1600)

Unfortunately, I do need 2 bodies for my wedding shoots, but my secondary doesn't have to be the best thing as it's a back up. Really want to pick up something....I'll keep you posted!

The hottest rumor going right now is that Canon is coming out with the 24-70 f2.8 L II with IS this year. I'm not sure if right now is the best time to pick a 24-70 up because the resale of those is bound to take a big hit down the road. You've got a decent lens collection now, if you're a wedding shooter the 7D's high ISO performance might mean more right now then a lens upgrade. How about a 7D and a Canon 17-55 f2.8 efs? That gives you a wide high quality f2.8 zoom that's probably better overall then the 24-70. If you go 1 series or 5D down the road you can always sell it and get most of your money back.

i have the 50 with a couple 40D's, I find that i would rather have the 30mm Sigma 1.4, but the 7D is one heck of a cam.
