My friend and I have different styles for our backrolls - one does it mexican and the other does it normal. But we have a disagreement on which one is mexican. Is mexican the position in picture 1 or picture 2?

Mexi roll looks almost like a front roll from the heelside. Regular backroll looks like your going around a pipe on a skateboard.

I dunno exactly what a mexican backroll looks like irl but I would say 2 for sure. Like Ben said...regular looks like going around on a pipe (regular = #1).

yea, 1 is a backroll, 2 would be your mexican. Actually, on number 2 if he only had one hand, i'd say he was throwing a tantrum.

Billy, a normal backroll looks like a reverse cartwheel with the nose of the board edging up and away from the wake. A mexican roll, is just as Ben A described above, looks like a frontroll roll from the HS. Equate it to a barrel roll, where your head is thrown between your legs as you leave the wake and the board rolls edge over edge.

Haha, thanks for the response guys. Nice addition wakeviolator - that will definitely set us straight. I'll post real pictures if I can find a sombrero for him to wear.

Mexican Roll: A Heelside Backroll where the rider throws his head and body down instead of to the side. It was named after Andrea Gaytan, a former female professional rider from Mexico. It's normally considered an uglier version of a Backroll, but it's the rotation style used for a Roll To Blind or KGB. It's sometimes referred to incorrectly as a heelside Front Roll.

I would imagine it was considered "ugly" by the early trick skier influence on the sport. Fairly sure the "traditional" backroll is a trick ski trick. Anyways, I personally think the average mexi roll looks better than the average traditional roll. Maybe it's the fact the rider is usually naturally more tucked and usually less of a hucked rotation...that or the sombrero.
