Ok looking for veteran input. I am new to boating world and looking to buy boat. I narrowed it to the Sanger V210 or V215, also having problems deciding new or used. I found a great new V215 for 36,000 or I could get a 210 for like 22,000. I really want to also get into surfing. Anyone out there surf behind a 210? I was also told to buy my second boat first. Any insight would be great. Just when I think maybe new, I see a 2002 V210 with everything, for 22k.

I won't go into which boat but would say if you have never been into boating buy used and maybe even less that your current price point. I say this because it will allow you, over a season, to figure out exactly what you want with regard to: space, storage, layout, wake, tower, bimini, etc.

If you go with a value/price point buy, in a year you can upgrade to a boat that will fit your needs perfectly.

...my 2cents.

I agree with Trevor. I am on my second boat 03 Sanger V-230. I bought an older IO when I first got into boating. I almost made the mistake of buying brand new. So glad I didnt. You learn your mistakes with the first boat wetather its new or used and in the current market you can get a lot of boat for your dolar if you go used. I cant say for the 210 or 215 but my 230 throws a killer surf wake. Sanger is a good choice too because the boat is very well put together. Either way you will be happy but I would definitely consider the used boat as your first choice. My .02

That is good info, man its tough because the new are at such a reasonable price (V215). I think really that boat would always fit needs too. but like you said a good deal on 210 would work for a couple years.

I saw a number of V230's selling for 33K a few months ago. Repo's I'm pretty sure.

I was looking for a used boat, possibly an I/O and then was looking to upgrade in a few years. I ended up going with a new 23 foot V-drive, which will meet my needs for years to come. I will have to say that I am happy I went new because I have had so much stuff to buy or add to the boat, I don't know where i'd have time to deal with real maintenace issues either. I love the fact that I can buy anything for the boat knowing I will be keeping in for many years. At least 4 or 5.

Personally with prices depressed like they are now, I would look to get into something bigger than the V210. You won't be dissapointed with bigger. You will get nailed with transaction costs if you upgrade in one year, so you won't be saving any money.

However I wouldn't say I am new to boating. I grew up around it and owned a large jet ski right before. So I didn't have any problems right off the bat.

I would say go bigger if you can especially if its a family boat. Unless your planning on advanced riding the wake really to me is not going to make that much of a difference between the boat lines. I went smaller and for the wake and am regretting it. Now looking for something bigger that will run in rougher water. Good luck.

The wake on the 210 is far from small or not advanced. I have a V210 and I will say that there is not a whole heck of alot of room difference between the V210 and V215 aside from the deepness of the boat.. personally I like the slumped in the water low look. The wake is kickin and the boat seats 2 families and some friends easily. PLUS IT FITS IN MY GARAGE.. With that said I recommend a used V210 and now you have left over money for storage, stereo, and of course GAS.

I had a DLX which is the Direct Drive version of the V210...same hull and size and now have the V215 and would recommend hands down without a doubt no questions asked go with the V215. The V210 is a sweet boat and a great wake, but if you have the option of the V215, go that way and you won't be disappointed. There is tons more space. If you are gonna surf, the V215 wake beats the V210 hands down. The V210 sits lower and you can not get as much weight in the rear locker.

...so I am on the fence on this one...There seem to be some great deals on used V215's out there.

Isaac I don't know anything about sanger wakes here in Florida. Just saying if you can go bigger even if the wake is not what 5% of the riders on here is advanced or pro caliber and your a family rider go that directions. Storage and seating for me the family rider has become VERY important. I have an XStar 205v wish I had gotten either a bigger BU, Tige, or even MC.

Shawn, you cant compare the space of a Direct drive 210 and the space of V210.. our friends have a Direct Drive 210 and our v drive has WAY more room.. you can fit alot more people in the Vdrive with the wrap around seating. Im not saying the V215 isnt bigger im saying, its not THAT much bigger as far as interior layout goes.. just my 2 cents.. I think if I had the budget I would have bought the 215.. but after seeing the 210 in my garage, I dont think the v215 would have fit in my garage and thats a big thing for me....

all great info from vets, man with these new boat prices on the 215 and used not being to far off its tough
Old     (zipe)      Join Date: Mar 2002       06-17-2009, 12:12 PM Reply
Oh yeah, I know there is no comparison in the DLX and 210 on space...been in plenty of 210's. The 215 is 6" wider and 10" longer than the 210. Adds a little to the seating area but adds a TON to the storage capabilities. Even with running an additional 1000lbs in ballast over stock, still have room to keep vests, bags, and all off the gear off of the floor event with the sub and all the stereo gear.

I love the V210 hull. If size is an issue, it would be a great choice...but if you are planning on surfing, knowing what I know now, I would go 215.

This is the first one that showed up a search...and it's loaded. Don't put off doing a little travel or buying a plane ticket, it could be very worth the $$ saved. For just a couple K more, I wouldn't even consider the smaller boat. Though just be sure you can swing it financially and don't have to bail on it if you lose your job for a few months.

I agree with Shawn on the additional storage being the biggest difference between the 2..

I haven't had the chance to test out the V215 but by all indications on here it is a top notch boat for boarding and surfing. I have a 2003 V210 and can tell you that as long as you're not looking for pro level surf wakes it won't disappoint. We get a nice clean surf wake with a 440 sack in the rear locker, full ski locker sack, 240lbs of pop bags under the side seat and a couple people on the surf side (see profile pic). The wakeboard wake is top notch and the performance, rough water ride, and fuel consumption is hard to beat. Only downside to the V210 is the low freeboard but I've been out on some busy and rough lakes around here no problem. Our typical crew is about 6 adults and our two year old daughter and there's always plenty of room, but the V215 will have slightly more. I'd say either boat won't disappoint it all depends on what you want to spend.

What are you getting with the used boat? Most Ive seen usually have stereo, ballast upgrade of some type and other upgrades already done for you. As far as matinence, I have had my Sanger for 2 1/2 years and put 150-200 hours a year on it and other than typical service only had 1 problem and it was self inflicted

Well I found a 2009 V215 fully loaded, OTD 40k and has all bells and whisles. I was not around boats last year and have been told I will never find that again. With the used 215 they are really only going for about 10k less.

Is that even a good deal these days? Some of the used prices out there are scary low.

I talked to a guy on the docks at Tulloch yesterday evening. We were looking at his V230 as we are looking to upgrade our old DLX. He said he picked up the 07 v230 4months ago for 26k....new. Said the dealer (don't know which one) had a bunch of 07's that were just sitting and he wanted them gone. He said he was looking at used, but found that some dealers are just looking to dump inventory. Just relaying the story, but it sounded crazy cheap to me.

Normally it is a no brainer IMO - buy something 2-4 years old. The kinks are usually worked out by first owner and the boat will be pretty fresh if taken care of. If you want something different in a couple of years, you do not take a hit on resale. But in today's economy, the new prices are worth some thought, especially if you are financing. If you can wait a couple more months, better deals are around the corner.

^^ Total agree, that's what happened for me, bought new.

I've actually seen the new boat prices go up significantly in the last month or two. It doesn't seems like there are many mint condition fire sale repos on the market anymore. Those that are out there have a much higher price. This just is coming from my internet surfing, could be different in person.

34K for a v210 seems a little steep. My wife said she saw a 2009 sanger v215 for 35.9 in tracy Ca

I can't speak to Sangers... except to say that they sure seem like sweet boats.

However, on used vs. new, I have some experience here. When I was shopping (June - Feb) I thought I was looking for used... I figured with the economy in the tank there would surely be desperate owners selling their boats. What I found was that the same boats kept showing up in the listings month after month with no price reductions. My theory is that many used boats have a loan to pay off... sellers probably aren't willing to sell below their loan balance. However, the new boat dealers have different motivations and more margin to play with before losing money. Once I started looking at new boats, I realized I didn't have to pay that much more to get a new boat with the benefits of newer features, warranty, etc.

So even though the new boats cost a bit more, in some cases they may be a better buy. I guess it all depends on the boats you are comparing. Between the two you've described... I'd spring for that new 215 all day long. Sounds like a great buy for a nicer, newer, bigger boat.

BTW... I think it's okay to get a new boat for your first. You said it best: "Buy your second boat first."

If you can't pay cash for it, you can't afford it. Find a used boat and go have fun in it.

Paying cash isn't very wise in most cases. You should have enough assets that you COULD pay for it, but pretty foolish to lay out all that cash unless your a playa
