The water intake hose for my engine came unhooked and I didn't realize it for a few minutes. I smelled something hot and shut off the engine. So there would have been no water running through the engine. Everything appears to be working ok...

Do you think any real damage occured? Is there anything I should check to make certain?

What year and which motor? What did the temp gauge read although it would not be accurate without water flowing through it.

The housing for the impeller may need to be changed and the impeller definetely does, along with the thermostat. The damage that can occur would be headgaskets, exhaust manifold problems, inluding the rubber hoses running to them, and cylinder wall/piston damage depending on how hot it got.

now ziggy if your profile was filled out we might be able to better help you like, if you have a late model boat it should have an overtemp alarm that goes off before damage is done BUT we dont know what kind or year your boat is??

I know the newer Malibu's, if overheated will only run half throttle and if the temp still gets hotter then they will only idle. This is an Indmar feature so it should be on most of the newer (2000 and up) wakeboard boats.

I would expect your engine to be okay.
I would expect your water pump to be toast.

I would also inspect your entire exhaust system closely, especially any rubber hoses that in the exhaust path. Usually, the first symptom of the loss of water cooling is that you no longer have water in the exhaust, which makes the boat a lot louder. The second thing that happens is that the exhaust system gets real hot because it isn't getting cooled. The rubber hoses don't handle that heat very well and can quickly disintegrate, which can create a major problem if they are below the water line!
