Looks like the new Ram is going to have a diesel option in the near future. This seems like the best option to pull a wakeboard boat. I am sure if Dodge does it everyone else will be soon to follow.

GM and Ford made their announcement on half ton diesels a few months ago.

About damn time. I still don't understand why Tahoes, Expeditions & Durangos don't come with a diesel as an option.

They could. I was in Detroit probably 5 years ago and my uncle who works for chrysler was driving a european diesel grand cherokee concept. It was a very nice ride.

well you used to be able to get diesels in half tons until about ten years ago they outlawed them? looks like they are changing some stuff. i like the idea of having an option to have them in other than 3/4 ton and so on.

Yea, the Grand Cherokee is the only American made SUV with a diesel option. 2008 will be it's 2nd year. But MSRP is $38k for a 2wd & over $45k for a 4wd!!
Should do OK though. The Mercedes built 3.0 liter has like 375 ft/lbs of torque in a 4300 lb truck!

The only other diesel SUV option I've found is the VW Toureg the the price on it is even worse...... over $60k!

The Ford is going to be a 4.5l diesel the only thing I can't seem to find is if they're going to beef up the suspension or not
Old     (siuski)      Join Date: Feb 2003       01-15-2008, 2:03 PM Reply
They'll amost have to beef up the suspension...like the GM 1500hd a couple of years ago. It'll be a nice option. But I'd hold off a year or so..don't want to be the beta tester for them! However, the more important question is when will Indmar/PCM/Merc get ahold of these smaller diesels and put them in a boat for a reasonable cost. I've heard that MC's option is 25K!

I wish Toyota would step up and do something like this

the only problem that i could see with putting diesel's in boats is when your out at the lake for a week or so. how many of the marine's on the lakes have a diesel pump. not any that i know of around me.
Old     (liveoz)      Join Date: May 2002       01-15-2008, 3:40 PM Reply
In Costa Rica, almost all the Toyotas were deisel. The Land Cruisers down to the little pickups.

Hardly any of the lakes around here have marinas at all. And the ones that do cater tow big yachts too so diesel would be easy to find.

What are you talking about we have 3 right here Bill....
Old     (bill_airjunky)      Join Date: Apr 2002       01-15-2008, 5:54 PM Reply
That would be the ones catering to the big yachts, right Rocky? Besides Coeur d'Alene, I bet there is diesel on Pend O'reille too. But there is no way you'd find it on any of the smaller lakes where the yachts can't go.
Same in Seattle. Easy to find on Union or Washington. But thats probably about it.

Mercedes offers a diesel in the ML SUV's....same diesel as the Grand Cherokee. It's a very strong engine. I towed a Centurion Avalanche with one and it surprised me at how it handled such a large boat.

The liberty diesel is Italian, the jeep diesel is supposed blue tec engine from benz, not really a pure american car, but I'm ok with that. The latest diesel power magazine has an article on a sema or auto show HD suburban with the new 4.5 diesel. GM would sell so many if they went into production. Maybe 09. Another couple years, diesels will be ruling the roads!

2001 was the last year that you were able to get a duramax in a suburban. However I had heard about them releasing a new diesel suburban as well as some new diesel hybrids.

I would love to have Heavy Half or 3/4 Toyota, but I might settle for a heavy half Ford. Love me diesel. Diesel=Boobies.

I thought Toyota and Nissan are both in development?

^^^

THey have been saying that for the last 10 years, what's left to develop, running everywhere in the world but the US.

Caddy is thinking about replaceing their north star with a v6 turbo diesel. It was a few years ago GM,Ford, and Chrysler announced it would put diesels in its half tons.

I remember reading something last year about a mastercraft with a VW TDI in it. Nothing since but I'm sure I saw it at some point

I'm totally bias to Dodge but I could see myself in this. Toyota is proven.

MC has a 197 w/ tdi option on it's website. Toyota has been promoting a 1 ton dually toyota concept with a 300hp 600lb torque hino 8 litre inline 6 diesel.

juiced4ever,
The Duramax was first introduced in 2001, and has never been offered in a Suburban. If it was, I would own one...
Old     (pilot_ryder)      Join Date: Apr 2006       01-16-2008, 11:25 AM Reply
but the fact that such a big engine (8l) can push the same numbers as a 5.9 cummins, ill stick with the tried and tested one

Chris it would not surprise me if GM put a diesel in the suburban when it starts to put diesels in its half tons

Hopefully your right, spenchy but don't hold your breath, they've been promising diesel Suburbans since I bought my current one in '01
I now have 155,000 miles on it (8.1L) and then they discontinued that in '05, so I'm keeping this one until they finally do put the Duramax in one.

What? I've been to CR 4 times and never noticed this. We rent a RAV4 every time we're there, and never a diesel option.

The diesel Suburbans up to '01 were not Duramax (Isuzu) - they're the old 6.5L's (GM?).

I've heard rumors that GM has a turbo diesel slated for the CORVETTE in the next few years.

As said, any big marina that serves yachts will have diesel.

GMC used to put the 6.5L TD in the Surburban

I think this is going to happen in late 2009 for 2010 most manufacturers's 1/2 ton models. Has to do with timing the release with the latest set of emissions requirements.
Old     (freshtracks)      Join Date: Feb 2006       01-16-2008, 3:47 PM Reply
The Ford is not going to be the 4.5L, but rather a spinoff of the 3.8L currently used in the Land Rover.

Tim is correct, you will see these in 2010 models, fall of 2009. The emission requirements for trucks in this GVWR range are far more strict than the 3/4 ton segment.

I love my Diesel truck, however the more veichles on the road that take diesel the worst the price tag for a gallon of fuel is going to be. Diesel has been 30-40 cents higher than unleaded for the last 6 months to a year and you only have one option to buy. When winter rolls around it jumps another 10 - 20 cents for no reason. We all know diesel is one of the cheapest fuels to make but it seems to cost more for no apparent reason.

Toyota does have a prototype diesel full size truck. It was out in the magazines last month. It was about 300hp with 525ft/lbs torque. If I remember right? Pretty good looking truck. They didn't have a relese date for the diesel tundra though.
If you want more info about it you can find it in the diesel truck mags.

Yesterday Toyota announced that the Tundra and Sequoia would have a diesel option "in the near future". If diesel is offered at more filling stations, the price should come down.

a diesel tundra would be soo sick, i would definantly look into one..... once i get older haha
Old     (point1234)      Join Date: Apr 2006       01-22-2008, 3:33 PM Reply
The reason that Diesel costs more in the winter is that it has to be blended differntly than in the summer. Otherwise it would jell up in the cold weather and would not run.
