So I attempted to swap my Acme 525 for a 911 today... My prop puller got shipped from the factory so it didn't shop up with the rest of my order... The guys at Wakeprops.com told me to hit it with a torch and it should pop loose. Fast forward, hit it with my trusty MAP torch, put a 2x4 up against it, knock it with a hammer and sure enough it pops loose probably 1/4"... Problem is the key is stuck to the prop and I can't seem to get it loose. Do I need to wait for the puller and just man handle it off?

I'm not sure but that's a awesome prop! I love it!

The puller won't remove the key from the prop......is your shaft slotted all of the way down the the threads? Most I've seen are not and the key would not be able to stay on the prop after removal

No it isn't slotted to the threads, which is the problem. The key is stuck to the prop, preventing it from sliding off the shaft.

My fault, thought you were saying the prop was off and the key is stuck on it.

You could always grab a puller at a local shop and return the one that was shipped to you- so to answer your question it would be best to wait for the puller.

Ill bet someone used a not aluminum key and it rusted,.. Had it happen to me. Just pound the hell out of it with a rubber mallet on the center or use a hammer against a piece of wood. Took me 2 hours of pounding to remove a rusted prop key on my last boat

just take a drift ( flat head punch) and tap it out with a light hammer...walk it out upwards and when you get a gap.. pop it out with a big screw driver..

Us some PB & smack it back to the shaft to get the key unstuck then beat it off (snicker)

I don't see how a puller is going to extract a key stuck in the prop keyway... I've been working on these for 20 years... take my advice..^..

So from the sounds of it, this thing is going to have to be beat into submission. I'm going out for a easy night on the lake after work (with the old prop *sad face*) but I'm going to try to get it off tomorrow morning, before we go out all day. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Any luck? Has anyone ever had luck loosening the prop nut a bit and letting the prop kind of pop free on its own? Do a quick stab in reverse to try to pull it off? Is this crazy talk?

The best way to do this is to pound it off with a hammer like I said. Is the key rusted or flipped over on its side inside the prop key hole? I left the nut on loose turned 1 thread and pounded it hard till it came off. Without the nut it would have shot off 10 feet and bent the prop. Throwing it in reverse won't do anything to get it off if u can't pull it off with a puller. I actually went riding one day with no nut because I didn't have the right one. Using reverse wouldn't even pull if off the shaft when it wasn't stuck

Be sure to pound on the hub side closest to the bow in a downward motion for 30 mins or so and it will come off you may have a few dents on the prop hub but won't effect performance

Finally got it off! The prop puller finally showed up and I managed to work it loose. I had the prop puller screwed all the way down and it was still stuck, so I wedged a socket in between the shaft and the face of the puller screw to give it a little more room and it finally popped off! The 911 is way smoother and easier to control than the 525, I love it. On the flip side the threads stripped out of one of my XM9's today
