Whats this about?

I saw these 2 Coyotes sort of strrung up/caught up in the Barb Wire just across the way from the entrance to the Lake house. I took a closer look and they looked like they were shot. I couldnt be sure they had some serious holes in them.
At first it looked like they tryed jumping there or over the wire and got caught. Someones said somtimes hunters or farmers hang them up to keep the others away. Any truth to that.

The way I understand it, it actually started with trappers back in the day. They would hang the coyotes on the fence to let the ranchers and farmers know they had been out doing what they were supposed to be doing and had removed predators from their land.

I've also heard they are used to keep other coyotes away, but its not true from what I've seen and heard from others. Sometimes the other coyotes in the area will just come eat the carcasses on the fence.

Farmers will do that believing that it will scare away the other 'yotes. It's an old wives tale- if you shoot one hang it on the fence for the others to see. They're really, really smart animals and dead 'yotes on a fence won't do a thing but attract buzzards and other pests.

I do the same thing with mosquitos. I slap them dead, but leave them on my skin as a warning to others. Works great, but I look a little gross by the end of the night.

Actually, I freed a deer that was tangled exactly like those coyotes are. The deer looked like it had jacked up it's leg in the process of trying to free itself, so I can't say how long it lasted after that, but it beat being bait on a hook for mountain lions...

I can't comment on the Farmer vs. Coyote issue...

It's a warning (to other coyotes) - but worthless. Remember the term coyote ugly comes from the willingness of a coyote to chew it's own leg off if necessary. You think a couple of dead bodies are gonna scare 'em off?

if anything it dropped the height of the fence down at that spot, making it easier for other coyotes to jump it. Dumb and ignorant thing to do, sad what some people do to an animal

Maybe the first one was shot and hung to attract the second, etc etc......
