how many of you have a winch? the only company that actually make them is 12 gauge and never ride. im thinking about buying one (i would prefer that over making one) anyone know of any decent brands to buy one and about how much? also if you have made one. can you post around how much it cost you and how you did it. thanks

The grinch is deffinitly the standard when it comes to winches. They are built like tanks and from my experience they pull well even when it is freezing cold out. We have a local guys taht pulls all time in the winter with it and it rocks. http://www.waterskis.com/The-Grinch-Winch-From-Distortion-Boarding-p/the%20grinch%20winch.htm Also, FYI they changed them up this year. The pull entry point uses a different system.

The reasoning behind the tall exhaust is the winch operator (which is usually my g/f) usually sits in a chair next to the winch while the winch is still on my hitch and the longer pipe makes the exhaust exit over your head instead right next to you. If the wo-man is happy I am happy lol

Montgomery- I would like to hear more about your releasing spool. Maybe even some pics. I'm going to make some improvements on my winch this winter and this is a must. Thanks.

Here are some pics of our Pimp Winches. We only make releasing spools and frames now, but I like to give people opportunities to see them for ideas. Both winches have 6.5 hp Honda GX 200 engines w/ first stage racing mod (9 hp) and they have releasing spools.. If anyone is interested, I think we are getting ready to sell the Red Baller Winch (let me know). Were making room for our next winch build to top all other winches... So can you buy a really long rope or do you need to put many together? Just curious as my brother and I would love to have a winch in the near future.

I got my rope (750 feet) from here http://www.seattlemarine.net/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=0&idproduct=9374 it's REALLY small rope but I know of about 100 different people that use this exact same rope for winchin' it's super strong and it's only $0.14 a foot. Not as pretty as the rope from bulletlines.com but it gets the job done just fine

Ken, I have a Kawasaki stand up jetski (550cc) with a trailer that I'd be willing to trade... I have a 10 acre pond in my back yard, and got this ski for that. I just never use it. I'd like to trade it for another toy I'll probably never use! lol. Maybe a partial trade? I have no idea what a winch is worth. My ski is worth right at $1000 with trailer. maybe a little more, maybe a little less depending on the buyer. Runs great. If your interested at all, pm me.

Ken- I would love one of your releasing spool but I don't have the money and I already have a nice spool I just need to figure an easy way to make it into a releasing spool. It looks like you have a pin through the spool and the axle? I'll post some pics of my winch later. I need to take some of the finished product first.

Mike, The winch is like new, comes with a detachable hitch mount not seen in the pics, and a brand new reel of 600' Bullet winch line.. Probably has about 2 hours on the motor: it was only used for 2 photo shoots. We never really used this winch because it was built for show, and we wanted to keep it clean.. We use the polished winch in the first 2 pics above for everyday riding. C.R. I appreciate the offer, but I'm not looking for a jet ski. Mark, Yes, there is a pin thru the hub.. The hub is attached to the right side outer spool wall in the pic.. Attached to both inside spool walls are highspeed ball bearings.. Thanks, Ken Land Bullet Lines www.bulletlines.com

runner04, the point of the releasing spool is to make it A LOT easier to pull the rope out after it spools up. You just pull the pin and the spool spins freely you put the pin back in and it's locked cocked and ready to go If you don't have a releasing spool it can be a bitch to pull the rope out

okay guys. we used to dirtbike and we still have two of our bikes. one of them is a POS and we MIGHT get 1000$ if we sell t.th other we could get 4 easy. but its a 250 2 stroke motor. it runs great, its AROUND 30 hp. i know thats way more then enough. but do you guys think i could build most of the winch using the frame and motor and what not from the bike? im thinking about offering my dad like 900$ for it or something. anyone else make theirs out of a dirtbike? im thinking it already has a chain and both sprokets so it might be worth it. thanks

Hey Montgomery or anybody else, does your winch have a breaking system? Does a winch need one? I'm thinking of building my own with my brother. Just want to get some ideas for our winch.

I don't have a brake on mine because as soon as I let off the throttle it slows waaay down real quick so I don't see a need for a brake on my winch but they are a good idea and I know a lot of people that run brakes on theirs. Ken has one on the red winch in the pics above you can see it on the right side of the bottom pic

Here's a pic of the side of my spool it's pretty self explanatory I cut 2 circles out of steel diamond plate and cut a 1 1/4" hole in the center of each plate and on one side I welded on a 1" i/d piece of steel pipe, drilled a hole through it, and then drilled a hole through my axle and stuck a pin in it

We use brakes because of the tight spots we are in, so we use it to suck up the slack and hold it.. It is hard to get riders up to speed quickly on short runs without a brake. My only recommendation on brakes is go with a hydraulic disc brake if you are going to add one: The manual disc brakes are complete garbage..
