Have you ever been on the lake, driving to, or on WW for that matter and seen a really nice boat and/or tow vehicle and thought to yourself. "I wonder what that person does for a living" I'm willing to bet most have. Let's see some boats or rigs and what you do. I can't understand how people have these 60-120k boats and 60k tow rigs. Makes me wonder what they do and what mansion they live in. I'll start the lower side of the bar.

Sounds like you're doing great with all of those toys at 24 years old. Save and invest 10% of your gross monthly income and you'll be purchasing a new boat in your 40's. Things just seem to open up in your forties.

I'm 30 and am a home lending manager for a big bank. I've worked for the same company since I was 17, all through collage and beyond. I started as a temp/admin, and worked up, most recently being promoted and moving to my wife's home town - a dream she's always had, which was cool to make reality for her. We own a home as well, don't have any pics of it in the summer, as we just moved in November.

I am a union fitter/welder on the heavy industrial side. I've got about 35k in collateral between my truck and boat. Both are for sell. The plan is to get back into a 5.9 cummins, all black 3/4 ton, and I plan on buying a new axis A22 in the near future. All black with orange accents I too always am asking myself what the hell people do to afford new boats and rigs!

Degrees now a days don't mean ****. Have a few friends who work on the oil rigs and they buy homes like I buy shoes. Education isn't what it used to be. Also have a bud who's in real estate, another one who has a roofing company ect ect... all make stiller cash.

Absolutely agree^^^. I've got a bachelor's for broadcast communications with a minor in public relations and couldn't find a job that paid worth a damn when I graduated college. Swallowed my pride and went to work in the oil field and now make a ridiculous salary to pretty much sit around all day and do almost nothing. Had I known back then what I know now, I never would've wasted the time and money on going to college. It's really only worth it if you plan on going to be an engineer or doctor of some sort.

I don't have pics with me at the moment but I am 37, financially retarded, never saved, I dont even have 10k in the bank anymore. I am the chief estimator for a medium size contractor. I drive a 2008 Ram truck & have a 2002 wakesetter. I have talked to a lot of dudes with new boats, some got life insurance checks, some make 150-200k a year others go without Cable, internet, etc & boating is what they do so a $600.00 a month pyt is the norm for them. When I shopped I said $200 & under is all I am willing to pay as I won't be able to stomach looking at a snow covered boat in the winter with a high pyt. I am very happy with with my boat. My dad passed away at 56 out of no where & it changed my view on saving & retirement so I spend now so I can enjoy my kids before they don't want to hang out with me. I've simply resigned myself to having to work for the rest of my life if need be. I can do what I do till I'm 90 & I look forward to being a Walmart greeter or working at a visitor center so I can talk smack & be a dick & have it chalked up to be old.

I’m 29 and a Product Manager for an employee benefits company. My gf is 29 as well and a Treatment Coordinator for an orthodontics office.
Boat: 2011 Mastercraft X-Star
Tow rig: 2001 Silverado 1500 (old girl with low miles and HD tow package with 4:10 gears and she pulls the boat like nothing)
Same outlook as racer808’s. Life’s short, my cousin and my gf’s mom passed away quickly so our outlook on life is to live it. Sacrificed some but made sure we’re on a lake with a dock and live life everyday and not looking ahead for the “better days” of retirement like some of our friends.

Civil Engineer (registered professional) - Primarily aviation consulting
Wife - Environmental/Civil Engineer (registered professional)
1997 Malibu VLX - paid cash in full
2012 4Runner - about half paid off
Own a sensible home - not paid off
1.5 kids - one is on the way

I like not having a boat payment. We could upgrade (not much of an upgrade), but the VLX is just about perfect for our needs. We will only use cash for boat related purchases, so there is no real burden. I could dump the boat on Craigslist for quick cash if we ever had a financial disaster.

I suspect that we will upgrade when the kids are bit older (in 5-10 years). I'm not sure if I will ever want to buy a new boat as there are so many great used ones out there.

My boat is 100% paid for, my truck and lexus could be paid for easily (have the cash), but interest rates are so low it doesn't make financial sense. My rental property has 70k equity and my personal home has 100k equity. I have no debt (other than my tiny truck/car payment), and I put 20% of my paycheck in savings, another 10% into retirement. I figure I'm doing OK at 27, 3 years out of school.

I run OnlyInboards.com full time. 2007 SAN 220 Team (this year) - don't need a truck for daily use and keep the boat on a lift so purchased a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 for the 2-4 times a year I tow.

Boat is for sale BTW.

I maybe out of the norm but most of the time when I also see people with these rigs I assume they financed it. Especially younger people.

I think the biggest thing I cant fathom is people buying 80-100k boats and only having a 4 month boating season.

yeah, the 220 gets a lot of slack but i'm not too sure why. I love the boat, love the funky interior. Handles like a direct drive. yeah she's a little weight sensitive side to side but the wake/wave is not lacking IMO.

....not another financial discussion..... LOL!

My wife and I have been very blessed. He provided us the ability to work and the jobs that help us pay for the toys we have so that we can spend time with family and friends. We financed the house, truck, and boat - financing isn't evil like some people make it out to be.

I think too many people like to brag about being able to pay cash for an expensive boat. Who cares...

Just upgraded to 2005 Super Air Nautique Team with 160 hours and paid cash for it. No pics yet.
Self employed fire alarm system designer
You have to get into a position where you can make more money by working harder and faster. That doesn't happen in a salaried position because if you're waiting for that big raise from your tight wad boss who's building his 4th vacation home then it will never happen.
I never made a ton of money but I made a big chunk at a time on a few occasions.
I also don't carry any debt except my mortgage. I bought a 330K home for 200 when the market crashed and everyone was afraid to buy and I put a ton of sweat equity into it.
I pull with my wife's 2006 Cherokee which is paid for. She doesn't work which frees me up to work hard because she does all the house work and takes care of our two kids. My Wrangler is paid for as well and because neither of us commutes we don't put any miles on them.
This is my fifth used boat. I lost as much as 2K on each boat when I sold them after owning for as long as 5 years each. This last boat was the first one I purchased while considering resale value. Previous owner still owed every penny I paid for it after owning it since it was new so I imagine he paid over 30k in interest and principle but has nothing to show for it anymore. It takes a lot more than what I've done to pay cash for a new 100K boat but I wouldn't recommend financing it.

This. If you ever want the million dollar homes and 100K dollar boats, you will never get there by working for someone else. (Ok, there are a select few CEO's of LARGE companies, but few). Self employment has plenty of pitfalls, but the upside is limitless.

Man all your guys rigs are something I would never see in my neck of the woods, but living in southern CA is a hefty expense from the beginning. Heck, most of your guys homes would coast in the millions here.

Me: 25 years old Field Specialist in offshore well cementing for an oil service company

Fiancé: registered nurse

We have:
2006 dodge 1500 paid for
2006 mercury mariner paid for
2008 Moomba LSV making payments
House currently being built (should be done in 2 weeks) will be making payments
And we are both still paying off student loans

We save a good bit in our retirement accounts as well as normal savings but the normal savings is being butchered with house expenses (furniture ect, not financing anything but the house itself)

Lets go back to reality a little bit here. Not sure what we are doing wrong here but:

Me: career firefighter/paramedic

Wife: pregnant with our first, registered nurse in a cath lab and a masters student

2003 Chevy silverado Duramax that is rusting out
2011 BMW x5 for her and the new baby (BMW- safest car out there- I don't care what the tests say.)

1989 supra comp ts6m boat good shape but currently looking for an upgrade.

Nice ranch house, nothing special
Paying off her student loans still

Hardly anything in the bank but we don't sit at home too often. Have fun now, die later. Seen way to many people die at young ages to worry about having money in a bank account for retirement that will go unused.

I'll play your little game...

26 years old and just accepted a new position as managing director of a pipe fabrication shop in Houston/Wichita Falls... the boat is about to get a makeover

2006 Toyota Tundra TRD 4WD - Paid off
2006 Sanger V215 Black Scorpion - Making payments for now (couldn't wait to get on the water and I have zero patience so saving over the next 5 years wasn't an option)
Renting a room from a buddy for cheap until I can get a place on Lake Conroe
Harley NightRod Special coming soon...

Single with no kids that I know of, but I do have one badass niece (pictured). Graduated from THE University of Texas (had to throw that in for Connor) - still paying on that one
401K looks good for my age.

Side Note: Couldn't agree more with Todd... the boat was definitely not the smartest place to put my money right now, but based on the first 5 trips on her this summer, it is completely worth it. I save what I can, but top priority is to enjoy the ride. "you just gotta keep livin, man. L-I-V-I-N"

Occupation vs. boat isn't really a good comparison.

Married or single? How expensive of home and other toys. If married, is wife a house wife, have just a crappy job or is a financial contributor to the family? Big note on the boat, small note, paid cash, etc.?

You'll find folks that make a ton of money and don't have anything all that fancy and vice versa. Look at these people with 15 year boat loans just so they can get into something new.

If you look into my situation, you just see a fairly worn out Chevy Avalanche tow vehicle and a 12 year old Malibu. Then you look and see we have a pretty decent house that is below our means, owe on nothing but that and my rental property, have a focus on putting money into retirement and enough free cash to buy a new wakeboat if we actually wanted to.

It's all about priorities and how you manage your finances. On the small body of water we boat, there is a guy I've met there that has ~2 million dollar house on the water w/ a slip. His tow vehicle is a later model H1 (when he pulls it in/out a couple times a year). Boat - 10 year old SAN. Guy could easily have a new boat whenever he wanted, lives on the water where it could be easily used daily. All about priorities.

I take care of 102 wifes well atleast thats what I tell everybody. I do Facility maintenance for two K-12 charter schools.
wife's accountant for a large aggergate company.
9 month and 18 year old boys two best things that ever happend to me.
This should raise some feathers
08 Dodge Cummins - payments
08 Calabria team V - payments
Just built a new house on 10 acres - payments
02 Xterra - 4 payment left
02 saturn (work car) paid off
Didn't want to wait 4,5,6 plus years to save money and pay cash for stuff besides all the memories that we have made on the boat are worth every payment.

If you're looking to be blown away by crazy expensive stuff, look elsewhere.

Me 27 - Staff member at a local college
Wife 25 - Dr. of Pharmacy
No kids, just two small dogs.

House - payments
09 f-150 paid off
09 fusion paid off
99 Sunsetter VLX paid off
Student loans - payments

Between God being very good to us, living in Texas, and my wife's career choice, we're getting by alright (knock on wood). Although I don't make much money, the work I do is good in nature which is enough for me. If anyone is ever in the area, stop by. We can shoot some pool, grill some burgers, and take a set.

We live very modestly and hate spending money. I get buyer's remorse after getting chic-fil-a... it's that bad. Everything mentioned above was purchased used and was a good deal. We drive cars 'til the wheels fall off and we'll have this boat until it sinks. Our house only cost as much as the g25, maybe a little more, but not much. We have just as much fun with our little boat as the crazy expensive new rides. And, when it gets a scratch, I don't mind... it's 14 years old!

I am 44 and my wife is thirty five. Two kids at home a 12 year old boy and a 15 year old girl. We are both journeyman steam fitters out of UA local 290 both working as foreman for Harder mechanical with matching incomes down to the penny. Live in a modest 2700 square foot ranch home well below our means. Still making payments and not in a hurry to pay off ass we need all the tax write offs we can get. Tow rig is a 2012 Ram 3500 Laramie crew cab short bed and will be paid off next year. Boat is a 08 centurion falcon and is paid for. We also have a couple bikes that are paid for and each have older work cars that are paid for. Hers is a 07 kia optima and mine is a 01 mitsubishi. Montero. We Both have a pension and a 401k for retirement and a nice cushion in the bank. Like nitrous bird said it all about priorities and not everybody's are the same.
