Andy, 1996 was first year for the 5.7 vortec (350 cu. in.)

It ran through '98 on trucks, and '99 on Subs and Tahoes, and through 2000 on Escalades.

Much better performing than the previous non Vortec 350's, I've had both of them.

Actually I saw an 03 P/U the other day with a 4.3L vortec in it. Typically it was put to bed in 2000.

The most I could ever squeeze out of my old '91 3/4 ton 4x4 Sub was about 11mpg.

My wife had a '98 Tahoe 4x4 we could get 16 at very best.(Highway, not towing) More like 14-15 average. (both were 3.73 rear ends)

You don't really buy this type of vehicle for it's fuel economy...

I have a 97 1500. I get about 18 MPG on the highway, and 10-12 towing at 60MPH.

im happy with 15 18 would be great.

im mainly using this to tow boats around and move boat parts thats about it.

we have a suburban also but i need a pick up bed. thats the main reason. I can buy one for cheap they are super easy to work on and motor/trans are cheap as well.
