Just bought an HP laptop, and thinking I might like to use iTunes. Dumb question is can you burn them to CD and then play them on a conventional CD player that plays MP3's?

Yes! However you cannot use those mp3 in any editing program like premiere, etc... because of the digital rights management (DRM).

Hey DPC, thanks for the info. That is a bummer. What about the other pay services such as Dell Music Match or Napster. I realize Kazaa is a source also, but I have heard there is a real problem with Spyware and other viruses.

Napster has the best DRM around (not surprising after all the legal trouble they were in), plus I found their bit rates (a.k.a. quality) to be lower

I've tried napster, itunes, and musicmatch. For some reason I was only able to get the downloads from musicmatch to work in premiere, but keep in mind that was almost a year ago… Thing could have changed since then.

For making CDs I would read the fine print and find the service that
1) Has the songs you like
2) Has the highest bit rates (because more is better=)

Kazaa - It works for some people, but I steer clear of it! All it take is one nasty infection and you'll end up spending hours upon hours trying to fix it! For those infected folks you might find this useful: http://forums.thatcomputerguy.us/index.php?showforum=39

Consider installing the following SpyWare and AdWare Programs:
AdWare: http://www.lavasoft.de/
SpyBot: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

And.. Running these free virus scans
MicorTrend House Call: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Symantec Virus Scan: http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=GKPF BXUQIZQVMUYTACD

Thanks Fu!

I have heard there is a free program called diet-K to protect you when using Kazaa...not reall sure about that as a viable option. Most places probably have what I'd be looking for music wise, but I would like to be able to burn CD's for the car as I don't really want to change out the system in my Landrover. Freedom to use them in videos would be a big plus.

I burn the CD's I create off on Napster, and they do play quite well in the car's CD player. I then rip the songs to MP3's using Easy Media Creator from Napster. The DRM's don't affect this, and I can then put them on to a MP3 disk I use in the boat's CD Player. Once you pay for the song and burn it, the DRM allows you to rip the music back to MP3. It is a 2 step process, but it does work.

I have a buddy who uses a "stream" ripper. This is a system that allows you to rip a net music stream from internet radio or pay to listen sites. You can rip them directly to a MP3 file with no DRM. do a google search and you may find a good program.
