What is the best way to wire 6-4 ohm speakers into 4 channels of an amp?

1 pair into channels 1 and 2 and then 2 pairs in parallel into 3 and 4?

would that work having channels 1 and 2 at 4 ohms and 3 and 4 at 2 ohms?

example: six XS-650's into channel 1 - 4 of a Syn 6 amp?

Thanks for any advice

Yes, thats right.

1 and 2 at 4 ohms
3/4 and 5/6 at 2 ohms

The syn 6 has 6 channels. Were you intending on using the last two for tower speakers or a subwoofer?

Yes,
planning on using channels 1 and 2 for the 2 bow speakers at 4 ohms, channels 3 and 4 for the 4 cockpit speakers at 2 ohms and channel 5 and 6 bridged to the sub at 4 ohms..

Just wasn't sure if you could mix ohm loads between the channels.

Is it a Dual Voice Coil sub? If so, I would wire the sub in parallel to provide a 2-ohm load to the amp.

It is a single 4 ohm sub..
I will be using channels 5 and 6 bridged so you would not want to be running at 2 ohms anyway..

If this were my boat, I would install the HT6 instead and run one speaker per channel. Connect all 6 speakers to it. That will give you 110 RMS per channel. The xs-650's are rated for 100 RMS. The HT6 is $350 cheaper than the SYN6 so now you can afford to buy a HT1 monoblock to power your sub.

Now you are running your 6 channel on 4 ohms which is less prone to overheating. The speakers will tune better if you use separate amps for your highs and lows. Also if you have an audio eq controlling your system you can control the bass level with ease.

Does anyone have input on this alternative?

Cameron,

The OP would need to bridge an HT-2 with his 4 ohm SVC sub in order to obtain similar power for the sub as bridging chnls 5/6 on the Syn-6. The HT-1 is only 300W @ 4 ohm.

The Syn-6 is 4 chnl hi-pass amp and a 2 chnl Hi/Low pass amp all in one fan-cooled chassis. There will be no tuning issues running 4-6 full-range in-boats and a sub. Its very content in running 6 in-boats and a sub bridged on 5/6, or a pair of tower speakers bridged on 1/2 & 3/4 and something like a 485 or 410 bridged on 5/6. Any amp can overhear, including the Syn-6, but we rarely see it. The Syn-6 has a bass-level controller, as well as it has dedicated inputs for chnls 5/6, so sub level control from an EQ will also work fine.

So if the OP already has the Syn-6, then rock it. If the OP is building from scratch, then the HT-6/HT-2 setup is worth a look for the extra power to to the in-boats and its Class-D efficiency.

yeah I am working on my buddy's boat. He already has a Syn 6 for the in boats and sub as well as a Syn 4 on the tower (4 Rev 10's)..
Going to re-wire the Syn 6 (factory wired 2 of the inboats to the head unit so I would like to get them on the amp. Also adding another Syn 4 to the tower
all from a 420SQ. Mainly wanted to make sure that the 4 channel half of the Syn 6 could be wired for 4 ohms on channel 1 and 2, and 2 ohms for channel 3 and 4.. Sounds like its not a problem.. Thanks for the help.

TigeMike,
These are the specs online for the syn6... "105 x 4 watts and 305 x 2 watts RMS" at 2 ohms. So you have 4 speakers, each with 105 watts going to them. Then for the 4th and 5th channel you have 305 watts each? Can you bridge the last two channels? Can the 4 speakers be 2 ohm and the sub be 4 ohm?

While it wouldn't have the blingy look of three wetsounds amps (and we all know how much time we spend staring at our amps out on the water), what about replacing the syn6 with a ks600.2 for the two pair of rev10s, and then running the boat and sub off of two syn4s?

haha.. yeah the 600.2 option recently occurred to me too Doggy

I really don't like the specs on the Syn6, its fine for a basic system but does not fit very well into a high power system..

1/2 half of a Syn 4 is not really enough for a decent sub IMHO..
Ideally, if it is to be an all Wetsounds System, I would add another pair of inboats (total of 8) and use a Syn 4 on that.. 2 more Syn 4's for the tower and a Syn 2 for the sub.

Cam,

This specs are correct. In the context of this thread, the only way yo get that 105 x 4 @ 2 ohm is to wire a pair of 4 ohm speakers in parallel. This equals the 2 ohm load at the amp that nets the 105W output. The ringer is, whenever you wire 2 speakers to an amp chnl, they divide the amps output, what ever it is. So in this case, the 2 speakers would split the 105, each netting 52 each. This hold true for chnls 5 and 6 of the Syn-6.

Yes, chnls 5 and 6 can be bridged with a speaker with a 4 ohm or higher impedance. its bridged output is 600W @ 4 ohm

You cant change the impedance of a single speaker, it is what it is. Most mobile audio speakers are 4 ohm. There are some 2 ohm and Polk offers a 2.7 ohm. What we can do, it wire a pair of more speakers together in either series or parallel to get a calculated impedance at the amp, but remember what I said earlier, what ever the amp puts out, is shared by all speakers on that chnl.

Subs come in a variety of coil configurations: single 4, single 8 dual 2 dual 4, etc. The different coil configurations are just a tool to get the best match for a given amp,

The reason I ask is because the original post asked about using xs-650s. I think that the xs 65 speakers are better because they match the output when wired in parallel on he syn 6.

If im reading the OP's posts correctly, he already has this gear in the boat, from the factory, and is simply looking to reconfigure the wiring so all 3 pairs of in-boats are powered by the amp.

Now, going straight by the specs, yes, the xs-65 is a better match for RMS of the Syn-6's 4 hi-pass chnls. But, there is nothing wrong with powering the 650 with 52W rms, it still has a great sound. Even though the 650 is designed to handle more rms then the 65, when powered the same, there is a detectable difference. Since the 650 and 65 are both a 4 ohm speakers, the Syn-6's output would be the same with either speaker.

Russ, what do you have or what do you want? There is alot of different ways you wanted to go.. Let nail your objective and give options based off what you want then what can be done in your boat.....

TigeMike... that is exactly what I want to do....

buddy's boat is a 2013 Tige Z3..
Factory gear is a Syn 4 going to a pair of REV 10's and a Syn 6 to 4 of 6 XS650's (Bow speakers are wired to the head unit. rear channels of the Syn 6 are bridged to a WS 10 FA sub.

Adding a 420SQ and another Syn 4 to another pair of REV 10's

Just wanted to make sure I could have Channels 1&2 at 4 ohms to the front 2 bow speakers and channels 3&4 at 2 ohms to the 4 rear inboats (wired in parallel). Sounds like it is not an issue...

I agree the XS 650's could take a lot more power, I run 8 of them on a Syn 4 in my boat and they sound great. IMO the Syn 6 is more appropriate for the XS-65's but this is what I have to work with for now...

Thanks for the comments guys
