I haven't used the Canon SW much but if you don't have Photoshop 7 or CS it's the only cheap alternative to processing RAW files.

I've had Photoshop 5 for quite sometime, but really haven't taken the time to "learn" it as the learning curve is pretty long.

For the average home user, do you recommend using the RAW format. I've been using the L format.

If you want ultimate control over your pictures shoot RAW. there is a learning curve and you do have to process ever picture. PS 5 doesn't support RAW, you'd have to upgrade to 7 or CS or use the Canon SW. When you have a chance shoot some RAW pics and convert them with the Canon SW, you may like the extra control.

You can also use Capture One Rebel to convert RAW files to jpeg, $49. Seems to be easier to work with than the Canon software and has more/better options.

I personally haven't found much need to shoot RAW though. I shoot large/fine jpeg and use Photoshop Elements to edit the pics and resize them for the web.

Bill,
Thanks, I think I will stick with Elements as it is much easier to work with.
