MC 2008 X Star LY6

I just got our new X and I have a question in regards to the Ly6. When the RPM hits about 5400, the motor cuts in and out. Dealer said that this is the rev limiter. Have any of you experienced this issue?

Sounds about right. What in the heck are you doing even running it at those kind of RPM's? You may check the prop. If you have a prop designed for heavy weight and hole shot you might only be able to top out at 35-40mph. In any case I don't think I would want to be running at 5400 rpm.

we were just test driving it on the lake with the dealer and they had us open it up. Got to about 45mph. They said that the cutting out is normal.

Oh yeah.... for sure. You're hitting the rev limiter. You can prop it to have more top end and not hit the rev limit, but you'll lose some of your loaded hole shot.

Anyway... Rev limiter is there so you wont blow your motor up by over revving, but don't let the boat sit on that thing. That's a lot of RPM's for a 6.0

They're definitely not made to go fast. Ours rarely sees more than about 30-35mph.

Yep, the rev limiter is your friend. It cuts off the fuel so you won't over rev and blow your engine. This is typcial on almost all modern boat and car engines. I know I have bumped in a couple times in my Z06.

I understand that the rev limiter is there in order to not blow up the engine. You would think that the engine would be tuned with the right size prop to prevent it from hitting that RPM.

Load the boat with 3K worth of ballast and it won't hit the limiter.

What size prop is on it? I have 2007 X-Star with the LY6 and have never hit the rev limiter!

Greg, I looking into that now. I had driven another 2008 X with the LY6 and wide open it never hit the rev limiter. The dealer told me that the boat we bought had the stock prop but something doesnt add up. What prop are you running?

I think the 14.25x14.50 is the high altitude prop?

It's tough to have the right sized prop because MasterCraft doesn't know what altitude and weight you are running.

I can understand that they dont know what altitude and weight Im running. But you would think that it would be set up not to hit the rev limiter out of the box.

Nope, how and where you run it makes a dramatic difference in what prop you run. A speed pop in Florida would have trouble getting a loaded boat out of the water in Denver. The power prop in Denver would over rev an unloaded boat at sea level.
