Pump It Up - Stepping Up The GPH

I thought these pumps were putting strain on the boats electrical systems and popping fuses and melting wires. Or was this problem fixed.

Whether it's on a wake boat filling ballast or on a fishing boat filling a bait tank, it still uses the same 12-volt system going through the same wires, so there's no reason for their to be any extra strain.

Thanks Dave a few years ago there was a fat sac pump out there that was doing it to alot of boats and it was a 2000 also. I was thinking of adding another pump to my 2001 San for the center sack in the ski locker and that looks like the one to go with.

Funny thing is that they are available at West Marine. A 700gph is $36, a 1100 is $45, and the 2000 was $139??? Don't know how that pricing works? I just went with 1100 and I wait the extra 2 mins.

If any of you have an Academy sporting goods store near by, you should check them out for pumps. I was there today and saw a Rule 1500 gph pump for $56.99 and a Rule 2000 gph pump for $69.99.

Perhaps I should go pick some up and then sell them on Ebay for $100 each? I could make $30 a pop and they'd still be $40 cheaper than anywhere else?

I had a 2000gph Rule pump that was wired to connect to one of my batteries in the back. This was ideal because I could hook up a pump for the back and then use the 12V for a 1100 pump for the sac in the front.

I did wire a 12V connection for my 2000gph but it once blew the fuse on my 12v, could of been because it was wired shady. Everyone who has ever ridden with me comments on how fast the 2000 pump was, its definely worth it.

Rule 1100 gph pumps on ebay for $25. For the pump only. Look under wakeboards. I bought one, fast shipping and you can pay with PayPal.

my 2000 kept melting 12V plugs. makes sense, as most of the plugs are rated around 7A and the pump is rated around 20A. What i did was to hardwire it, and use one of the aux switches on the dash to turn it on and off.

I run a 2000 gph wired to a stock MC dash switch. I did use thick wire to from the pump to the switch and have had no problems with wire heat, fuses , or switch.

There might be something to the 2000 GPH having a extra load. I've never popped a fuse but the plug gets hotter than hell...It even melted my first plug.

That's a good point. You definitely have to get a plug designed to accommodate that much amperage. I'm sure there are a lot of cheap ones out there.

Actually that was the plug that the pump came with.

ok now we are getting somewhere this the problem I was talking about. Walt a few friends that also had the same problem and they keep melting wires and went back to a 1000. I agree they were very fast but he went threw like 3 pumps. So they must of fixed the problem.

i went through the stock plug plus about 5 others (even bought 'heavy duty' ones.) the dash switches are rated a lot higher so went that route instead. I was pretty surprised that skylon (who sold the 2000gph pump i had) put a 20A fuse in a 7A plug. you think that would open themselves up to some liability issues.

I try to use my battery pack now instead of the cigarette lighter. If the plug is getting that hot then there is a good chance my wires to the lighter are too.
