Aiight I keep seeing pictures of boats with LEDs and I think it will be one of my winter projects. Some local guys own L.E.D. Concepts and both of their boats are awesome looking with lights. I know Adam, the guy with the Supra has lights in the floor that wash it in blue, but I am not sure where he put them. It looks awesome and you may consider putting on in the floor too. Adam you have any pics of yours in the dark?

has anyone ever used car "neon underglow" for a swim platform job. its only 40 dollars on ebay and they are definately long enough and are wired to 12V so can hook into the interior lights switch. i think it would be a cheaper and still very good looking solution to many pods of LEDs that went for 150. Any problems with it? thanks

Problem 1- Waterproofing. Neons use a transformer type power supply which on most tubes is located very close to the tube. I do think they would look cool, but the application to put it under water wouldn't work IMO

The "neons" im referring to are actually just a strip of LED's that claim to be waterproof. I prolly shoulda posted a link so you could see but its just a tube with an LED strip and long enough wires to reach the inside of the boat. It has a sort of transformer/ switch box but that can be located inside the boat. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/UNDER-CAR-36-48-x2-NEON-LED-LIGHT-RED-SWITCH-INTEGRA_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33714QQihZ017QQ itemZ270046814868QQrdZ1

the completely waterproof pucks work better, several boats have already been done, mine will be done with them by next spring. When we load up the ballast the platform spends lots of time under water, I would not trust the tubes.

The strips in the link are going to be no different than other LED strip lighting. If you research some online suppliers, you will find this type of lighting out of the tube form...That is how the above pics have the glow ring around the cup holder. The problem with the tube style is that the resistors and other electronic circuitry are in the long black part of the tube. Other strip light LED's dont have that.

Mikeski what are these waterproof pucks you speak of i am interested. Do you mean like how wakespecialty used to have them? Todd I did some searching previously and made my own cupholder rings from a type of flexible surface mount LED strip and they look great but Im not exactly sure what you are hinting at in your response. Are you saying to find the strips from a supplier and put them in my own waterproof tube? That would be a good idea and probably cheaper. im also an electrical dummy and have no clue how to hook anything up. my plan was to replace the standard uggo interior lights with red ones as well as add a few others such as the cupholders. i inteded to just splice in an LED to the existing lighting wire that runs through the boat wherever i was going to add a light. I dont need a full instructional but was just wondering how it would be properly done. would a new line be run to the fuse box or use the existing one or individuals. they will all be hooked to one switch so its either all on or all off. thank you

Keep in mind that when you install under platform LEDs that not only are the submerged frequently, but forces tend to pull at the lights while the boat is underway. I am not sure how the puck style LEDs attach but they need to be secure. Below is a picture of my LED from Wake Specialty. You can see how the are mounted. Each pod is glued and screwed to the plaform as well as the wiring between the pods. These also maintain a low profile which cuts down on the drag which can cause them to loosen and possibly come off. David, You can connect/splice the LEDs directly into the courtesy lights on you boat.

David, I was trying to say to shy away from using tubes all together. If you will notice, most of the underwater platform kits use led pods that are waterproof themselves. I believe you can find these from suppliers online and make your own kit without using the strip lighting. As for the strips, I dont think they would be the best route to go as (pretty sure) there are resistors by or behind each led.

You can make your own hockey puck type LED lights, I use scraps of Starboard or high density plastic. Drill holes for the leds, then one large one in the back for all the terminations. Solder it up and fill it with epoxy, it's waterproof and good to go. They are fine for places where you can't see them, like under the platform, in the glove box or storage spaces, in the cooler.

Hey Guys, Can you use one side of the platform mounts as your positive lead, and one as the negative. then, on the inside run a wire to the bolts that go through the transom, VOILA power leads outside your boat. I figure there is probably not enough current to cause a short circuit???

Those look almost identical. However those are 4 LED pods where as the WS have 6 LEDs per pod. I wonder the brightness differance? I might just go with these. Great find!

David: Hey if your intrested in the LED strip's let me warn you. They are fragile and untill they are installed in a fixture where they cant or wont flex they are easy to break. I know they show them bending all over the place but after you bend them the other way they are real easy to break the connection between the LEDs and then you will have a broken or burnt out light right in the middle of your strip. If you decide to get them just be real careful untill they are mounted in a fixture and then they are good to go

Thank for the warning grant. I have been looking all over and emailing all the sites i could find and all of them reply in broken english how they sell 5m reels but a minimum of 30 reels must be purchased or something along those lines. Im trying to find an alternative solution such as the angel eyes or maybe something different but if i do go the smt way ill be sure to be extra careful. I just ordered a single 12" strip of these http://cgi.ebay.com/12-Flexible-Thin-LED-Strip-w-30pcs-Pure-Red-LEDs_W0QQitemZ220039966623QQihZ012QQcategoryZ26207 QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I figured for 5 bucks it was worth a go. the description is quite vaque and the picture shows what looks like standard 5mm dome diodes. when i do get it ill put some pictures up. Luke and todd and to whoever else was checkin up on the 6led pod deal i read somewhere how the pods in the sort of dome cases are water resistant but are not recommended to be used for long periods of time submerged. however some of the other square pods with 4 or 6 LEDs say that are completely waterproof and can be continuously run underwater. Just curious as to others experience or thoughts on that as well. thanks all.

Your only concern with LED's not being waterproff, is over time if not sealed they will corrode and break. Any LED will do fine under water for a while. Break open the cases and fill with a little silicone. They won't last forever, but just replace as necc, lol.

Hey Dave, You can cut them down a bit if you need shorter. and by the way they are made, I would assume you could tak on an extra length to get what you need. I know the cup holders on my engine cover are 12" around, so these would be perfect.

DJ, multi color is definitley a personal thing. I dont like the look of the mutli color christmas lights, and would never put them in my boat. Although, I'm sure that others think they are the shizzz.

luke, not multicolor as in each light is a different color. I agree, that would be horrible. But mutlicolor as in each led can have 65000 colors, and you can cycle through them in patterns, or to the beat of the music (higher frequency respnonces = more red..etc). so the whole boat changes. donno, just an idea, since I've played with these led's some.

Since my boat is white with black accents, I wanted to do UV (blacklight) LEDs in my boat. I had trouble finding LEDs that truly produce UV light. I found that cold cathode lights actually produce better UV light than any LEDs. However, the amps required for the cold cathodes is much higher than LEDs. Therefore, I went with a combination of cold cathode and LED. I purchased several of the 30 leds per 12" strip and have been pleased. Of the UV LEDs that I have purchased, these produce the best true UV light. http://cgi.ebay.com/12-Flexible-LED-Strip-w-30pcs-Ultra-Voilet-LEDs_W0QQitemZ220048254578QQihZ012QQcategoryZ66951 QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting Heed Grant's warning, they do break if you are not careful. However, you can solder them back together or just us a portion of them. (Message edited by jroyal on November 14, 2006)

I was looking on the internet on how to make plans and i will try a plexi ring as well as try the angel eye approach. yes they strips can be snipped every 3 leds and there are even lead holes to solder in another strand. my malibu is in storage anyone know the exact outside diameter of the cupholder right at the top so i can make a ring?

the angel eye method looks to be way cheaper. you can purchase an acrylic rod of 6feet in length for 3 dollars and you only need 2 individual LEDs. Definately not as bright but its mood lighting not light so you can read a book.
