Hey all

I'm looking into a new boat that uses the new Merc DTS engine with smart tow. I've been hearing Mercruiser engines can have some issues with them, but what are your guy's thoughts on this engine?

Can it be said that there will likely be more problems with it than other manufacturer engines?

manufactures order engine long blocks from gm and attach there parts like pumps, belts and sensors and tag it there own.Internaly there identical but accesories can vary a bit.I know the seawater pump on my old mercruiser was like $550 and the one for my new indmar is just over a hundred.

The mercruiser with DTS is great and so is the smart tow. Set how fast you want it to take off and how fast you want to go. slam the throttle and it takes off the same way everytime. It also holds its speed very well. Mercruiser has its problems like everyone else.

I have had 6 boats all with Mercs and never had an issue once. Just make sure somebody (dealer or service center) is around that offers you parts and/or service in case you do need it - what good is an Indmar, PCM, or Merc if you have to drive 3 hours everytime you need something?

Oh yeah and the new DTS engines and GPS Smart Tow is incredible and makes the others (speed control systems) nostalgic.

I've got over 1200 total hours on two Mercs. not one problem with either one.

3500 hours on a Merc 4 cylinder. It smokes a bit but when it was new it used to get over revved by a thousand or so. 200 on a Scorpion with no issues.
