I have a single battery and want to put on a perko type battery switch to turn everything off between uses. I saw something that it could be used on the positive or negative cable side. Any thoughts?

Put it where you have the least wires. On a car where you have lots of grounded metal around you put it on Positive to make the battery dead even if you short to the chassis so that's the normal but it does not matter.

Switching the ground side would be very unusual, I'd switch the positive.

I agree with Edward and Art.

I wire a lot of hot rods from scratch, and I always put the disconnect on the negative side. That way, when it's swithed off, the body & chassis is no longer grounded, making it impossible to ground out to the body or chassis. It really doesn't matter though, as long as there is a break in the circuit. Put it wherever is easiest.
