I am considering buying the 2009 Lyman as a backup board but have never ridden it before...

Could you guys help me and give me some info as to how this compares to other boards?

I currently ride the 2010 Watson Hybrid, but used to ride a 2009 Watson LTD.

How does the Lyman compare to the 09 Watson?
I like doing a lot of surface tricks and I like how the watson is pretty slippery when its sideways... Will the Lyman track more?
What about the cupped fins? what are they like to ride?
The Lyman seems thinner than the 09 Watson... Does it flex like the Hybrid?

I would appreciate any advice you guys can offer!!!

Thanks!!

The Lyman is fast on the water. Good pop off the wake. Rides a bit loose, even with the fins, locks in on edge. It is thinner in the tip and tail, but it does not flex. A great board if you like a fast ride.

What do you mean when you say it rides fast?
Do you mean it rides lighter?
or do you mean it edges hard with just a little heel or toe?

^Have you ever ridden a board with a continuous rocker? The board, when put on edge, travels more quickly than a typical 3 stage rocker. The Lyman is advertised as a 3 stage, but it's speed is that of a continuous rocker. It rides a tad loose when you are not on edge, meaning that it does not grip the water as hard. When you put the board on edge, it will edge hard.

I have not ridden the board without the removable fins.

I definitely would recommend this board.

Have not ridden it yet but have seen some smokin deals on ebay for the 09 Lyman

i 2nd wake77.
fairly loose when flat
but all the bite and speed when on edge:-)

by the way :
2008, 2009, 2010 lyman: all the same. just different graphics and insert spreads. maybe different stance options.
but the shape is identical.

Would you say its looser than the Watson and the S4 when doing surface 360s in the flats with no rope tension?

with my 09 watson (no center fin), I can pretty much spin the board flat, but i cant do it with the S4 or the Hybrid...

Jeremy pretty much hit the nail on the head with his description of the board. I would also highly recommend it. I cannot compare it to the watson since I haven't ridden one. Just like the others have said, the lyman really does lock in when you're on edge, and is a fast board. Good luck with your decision!

looser as the S4

not as loose as the watson hybrid without fins. that's too loose for my taste.
but than, you can also take 4 of 8 fins off (lyman). i myself never tried that.
love it how it is

I agree with most of the statements above. I'd definitely recommend it.

Jeremy (wake77) "Lyman is advertised as a 3 stage, but it's speed is that of a continuous rocker."

The Lyman is actually a continuous rocker board. LF messed up when they were doing the writeup for the marketing materials and their website. Like mentioned above, it is loose when you ride it flat, but locks in once you get on edge, even with a light edge. The board pops well, and lands soft. It will definitely feel different both tracking in the water and popping compared to a Watson, but definitely a solid choice to ride.

somewhat off topic question, but did they also mislabel the rocker on the shane board? I just picked up an 09 and the specs say aggressive 3 stage, but it looks continuous to my untrained eye.

I have the 08 Lyman (same shape) and love it. Like everyone said, very fast, loose when neutral, locked in on edge. Great pop. Strong as an ox. Its super thick in the middle to withstand Lyman like landings. I have never heard of anyone breaking one (Im sure its happened though).

I rode Lyman's actual board at one of our photoshoots... and I LOVED IT... I currently ride a LF PS3 and honestly, felt like throwing it away after riding Lymans! LOL.. The PS3 is nice, but everything felt so much better on Lymans...

I'd say go for it! Pick it up!

If anyone is interested.. I have the #1 of the 10 signed, numbered Lyman grind boards that Buywake had made a while back.

I like the board, but it's a 139 - I'm switching to the 143... so the 139 is going on the block.

Had one for a weekend then left it on the bimini and drove off. Lost mainline and handle. BIG FING mistake. Bad weekend and feelin like a dumb arse.

I rode the shane for the last three seasons before I switched to the lyman this season. I was skeptical about leaving the shane, but after riding my Lyman for the last 4 months I couldn't imagine riding anything else. To me, it's the perfect board. Try it and you will fall in love.

They lyman is a good board, but doesn't hold up well on rails and other obstacles ( board has the grind base). My buddy rode at our local rail park last week. First time ever taking the board to a rail park. By the end of the day the upper deck was splitting from the grind base down the side seem of the board.

Hunter, the regular Lyman does NOT have a grand base, Thats why it tore up quickly. Only the Limited Lymans have Grind Bases.... I used my Limited Lyman last year for BOTH wake and rails and it lasted me all season. The base of my Lyman from last year is still rideable.... (I broke my 09 Lyman on a tail grab off a double up this year)

Its not a regular lyman notice the ( board has grind base) in my above post. Its the white and lime green 139 with the grind base. I know they are supposed to last, but his def. did not hold up.

thats a bummer man, I rode mine all last year at East Coast Wake Park countless times, OWC, the Projects, jibbing random stuff, and behind the boat and it held up great but ive never heard of one not holding up

Is there anything noticeably different about the way the Lyman F.L.Y. rides compared to the regular model?
