Ryan, that link wouldn't open for me. I have made up a basic checklist, but without being a mechanic, can't exactly diagnose potential engine or tranny problems. I looked at a boat last week that had some serious problems. I knew it was going to be a project boat but it was in worse shape than I thought. The boat had been neglected for some time, the guy took it out and ran it one time this summer and said it ran great, then had it at a dealer to get some work done so he could sell it. They did a compression test, and found out the block was cracked from freeze damage. My question - would this have showed up on a test ride? If you're looking at a long-distance boat purchase, and the boat runs great, looks great, and its obvious the owner has cared for it, is that good enough? It could be a logistical issue to travel on a weekend to look at a boat, decide on it, and have it checked out. Maybe two trips are in order.
