Asking for gas $$$

Generally, how much do you ask your friends for for gas money? Or how much do you give? I need to start asking my friends, but don't really want to end up with no people to ride with as high school kids aren't quite made of money. Gas is about $3.50 here right now.

Anyone who rides behind your boat should be giving you at least $10 per pull. That's about what they will use for each ride.

My rule is to never ask for money - if you don't drive, bring adult beverages, or offer tons of stoke throughout the entire set you get one more chance to ride and produce gas money. After that you get left at the dock until you bring cash or a big can of gas.

Usually just plain common courtesy would be the norm to offer money to the host. But then again common courtesy and sense no longer exist for many in this day and age.

gas money is always appreciated but never expected... I'm going out with or without you...

I would say it depends on your boat and how much gas it uses for each set...usually my friends will give me 15 to 20 bucks, or in return, will just let me take a set behind their boat some other time. I think the best way to do it is to have them purchase a gas can [5-6 gallon] and bring that. That way there is no fuss about how much to give or accept.

Brandon (Badboyripper)Nailed it. Just think about how much gas you will put in your boat for the days outing. I usually, at least this year, spend around $120 for 4 hours hours of Riding. I always suggest we split up the cost with my crew they, never complain, we usually all roll to the gas station together. I mean after all asking them to cover some gas is no big deal after you consider, you paid for the boat, the insurance, the depreciation, and maintenance on the boat.

$10 a run is staple with my crew. Very often I just hand people a gas can and say go filler'up. A six-gallon can usually is about $22-23 to fill. Good enough for a few pulls. Some people in my crew I never ask for Gas money but then again I ride behind their boats without paying just as much as they ride behind mine.

You'll find that some people just start handing over cash right away before they even ride, and some people you just have to ask for cash every time. Just do what's comfortable, but make sure you get that cheddar!

When I ride with people behind a weighted boat, I usually give $15 or so per pull.

When we take people we usually dont ask for to much maybe like $15 for the day...everything gets written off as a business expense!

A previous thread on this subject made the distinction between "crew" and "guests." Obviously, your crew should pay more than your infrequent or first time guests.

I look at it this way. If you are on my boat because I called you and said "hey, you should really come out with us sometime, it's really fun" -- I won't take any gas money.

Whereas, if you are on my boat because you called me and said "when are we riding this weekend?" -- I expect $20 from you; $30 if you drop the wedge!!

And obviously there are varying degrees in between.

around were i ride nobody ever asks for money or offers to pay. we all have boats and its just something that comes with owning a boat. The riding gets split up pretty evenly between all the boats too, so i guess it all evens out anyway.

Like Phantom said common courtesy should take care of it and people should already help with gas or adult beverages.

I say just ask anybody new for $10 right away and try to set the rule that thats what you expect or else they don't get invited back out.

If the other person owns a boat i consider it a wash because i'll be getting pulls from said person at some point on their tab.

Mike and I just upgraded to a newer vlx, so we are stoked..even tho we have had nothing but problems with it so far..but thats another story. How are you man? You coming around the bay this year at all?

I pay the boat driver about $40-$50 per day, depending on how many people are out there with us. More people, less per person because you have more people to split the cost. But $10-$20 just doesn't cut it anymore. especially if you think about all the gas you use just driving to the spot to get good water in some places. Even boat riders who dont wakeboard should throw down cash as well.

Im with Jason. Get real. $10 bucks? Thats so five years ago. Step it up people. Dont forget the person probably had to fill a truck to get the boat to the lake.

Most crew riders or 'non-guests' know about the cash for gas. I'm just amazed how many people forget to load up with cash before heading to the dock. Would they forget to have cash if they were heading to a cable park or go snowboarding - Noooo, but since there isn't a ticket gate I have heard "Ohh I forgot to run by the ATM - I'll get you next time" more times than I care.

I would be happy with $10/set.

I'm somewhere in-between the opinons so far.

I don't feel entitled to receive gas money just because I have costs associated with boat ownership. I own a boat because I enjoy owning a boat... and gas prices will not keep me off the water.

If people want to chip-in, great. If not, that's their choice too... but if they can afford to chip in and don't, that will certainly be taken into consideration and at some point they don't get calls anymore.

My biggest pet peeve is people who make you go out of your way to their benefit -- then they are the last ones to offer gas money. And I will never go out of my way for them again.

Quit bitchin about gas for cryin out loud. If you have a boat you might as well enjoy it. does not do any good to have an investment just sit there. If your so concerned about gas than sell your boat!!!! You will regret it though not being out on the water

preach on jason...no one is complaining..rather, expressing their opinion on the gas matter.

I just pull up to the marina (only game in town) to top off before the first pull. Most people take the initiative and throw in some coin.

hahaha KTJ called a boat a investment LOL A boat, Car, or any other vehicle is a depreciating asset. But its KJT wants to fill up all of our boats I will be glad to stop bitching.

yea 10 bucks a set is plenty fair asking people to pay for your tow vehicle gas and insurance isnt always fair especially since you were going to pull the boat there anyway with or without them..


the only time that would be applicable would be if a big group of us decided to tow the boat farther as a group to get better water or take a camping trip then all expenses should be split equally..

however if gas prices keep rising then so will the cost per pull..id imagine by june it will be 15 a set ...

$80,000 for a new wakeboard boat??? i wouldnt call that pocket change... If your gonna spend that much money, gas probly isn't an issue. Im just proving a point here. No one is going to leave there boat on the trailer all summer because gas prices are high. In fact its only about fifty cents more per gallon than last summer, and i do believe this has been an ongoing thread for a couple summers now. of course filling up on the lake they are going to rape you.

I always see people complain about filling up onthe lake and how expensive it is. Am I the only one that thinks that is incredibly dumb? I have gas cans and fill my boat that way, why dont others and save the 1.50 a gallon by doing so. The one time you do will pay for the cans themselves.

I guess Im pretty lucky then. Gas at the marina is only about 25 cents more than it is at the pump. Not worth the effort of filling up jerry cans.

We usually only go out to ride so if they don't bring gas the boat is empty so they couldn't ride anyways.
If they are close friends i don't mind as we usually go out on each others boats all the time

I guess it comes down to the type of person you are and the type of people that ride with you. If I go to ride on some body else's boat I would drop at least $20 for gas. I don't expect people to give me money to pull them but it does show the type of person that they are if they ride and bail.

i never ask and donttake it when they offer. i just tell them to bring the beer and food and if they buy my wife and i dinner when we hit the bar on the lake i call it even

im suprised at how many people done ask for gas money. Im a bit different because im a college student which means im broke. My friends split the cost of gas with me everytime i fill up because if i had to pay for gas on my own, i wouldn't be wakeboarding

best i can tell is my xstar with L18 and moderately weighted uses about 3.5 gallons per ride (ride equals 3-4 falls, till you get tired and throw the handle, or ride about 5-7 miles. at 3.5 gallons X $4.00/gallon = $14/ride. i am going to tell everybody $15/ride from here on out unless they are my first-time guest and if they offer money i will graciously accept it. i burn around $120-$140 per day. i simply can't afford that. it's usually just my wife and i getting in 2-3 rides apiece then we're out and that's expensive enough.

everyone down here just brings a 5 gallon can filled when they come ride, it is just what everyone does, that way no one gets screwed over on gas 10 dollars and even 15 dollars doesn't cut it anymore. it is 18 dollars to fill up a 5 gallon can....

I think its just finding a good crew. I never have to ask for money, I ride with a crew that always offers. I had three riders with me this weekend. I put around 20 gallons in the tank for about $68.00. The total amount I was offered was $75.00 between three riders. Two riders took two sets and the other took three.
