Hello - I am helping a friend decide on a new purchase. He is looking at a 2012 Malibu VLX. Can anybody advise on how the boat is for surfing or suggest any other boats to compare?

Have done a fair bit of search here, nobody really responding to the VLX wave, everyone has an opinion about the LSV

Need to keep the boat under 22' to fit in a pretty small slip

is the 2012 VLX a decent surf boat?

From what ive heard the VLX is not the boat to look at if you are looking for a surf boat.

For under 22' the Tige Z1 and Centurion Enzo 211 would be the boats to look at.

I just picked up a 2012 vlx last year. The wake is def surfable. I have front center and rear (side) ballast full with wedge. If you have less than 3 people in the boat you will need extra ballast in the rear. We added a 600lb and surfed great.

The Malibu Surfs fine, if you want a big wake with less weight then as suggested look to the Enzo 211. Malibu has a good surf wake, yet the flat hull in the rear causes it to need a lot of weight to great a big wake with lots of push. There is a great video of a 2013 with surfgate and it shows a great wake, however there is so much extra weight in the boat all across it to achieve the wake with both Surfgate & wedge.

But if you like the boat then rock on!!

Yes, the VLX will produce a good surf wake if you are willing to put in enough ballast. Here is a short clip of my 2009 VLX wave.

Grant how are you weighting your VLX and what speed were you riding at?

MLS full except non surf corner, custom "enzo" style sac in the corner and up under the seat, 450 on the seat and 450 in bow, wedge all the way down to a couple clicks up. Speed about 10.5 in this video. Also this is with just a driver in the boat, you could definitely exchange some people for all the sacs on the seats.

2012 VLX Stock ballast + 1100 in the corner + 400 lead surf side bow + 4 people

This was with 1100 + 400 sack + 200 lead + 3 people in boat

Was an awesome surf boat! Just traded in for 2013 23' LSV with Surf Gate though
