If you guys are interested in starting a flicker group let me know. I really think moving this would be better. How does the wakeboarder's photography group sound? I don't want to have to go back and process some of my work to meet the size restrictions here.

Why not something to do with Wake World since this is where it all started? I would love to keep it here but yes, the file sizes are kind of limiting plus a lot of my work is already there. Either way I am cool with whatever.

Well there is a very similar thread on wakeboarder with some talented photogs. I think not having a site affiliation would be best, but if we do this then it should be open for discussion.

bakes, thanks for setting that up. I know we could get more people involved if we don't limit it to only wakeworld users. But if everyone here would like to keep it just wakeworlders I understand. Either way its a good start. -Chris

It means that the maximum size of your picture can't exceed 1025 x 1025 pixels. You just need to re size it.

I REALLY want to get into HDR but I have yet to install my latest version of CS3. I know, what photographer wouldn't jump at the chance to upgrade PS? Well, my excuse is that my laptop is usually home to a ton of video and photo files and I haven't been able to clear off enough space to install it. Soon though, soon.

Walt, in photography, HDR is a type of post processing where you take several images, ranging from under exposed to over exposed and "merge" them together so that a higher range of values between light and dark are shown. Some examples from Flickr: http://flickr.com/search/?q=hdri&ss=2&s=int You can use Adobe Bridge/Photoshop to make them but a lot of people like Photomatix. I've only tried it once or twice in Photoshop, while stuck in Arizona during some Solaris training: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/133/369382855_205f4a09bb_o.jpg

What are you trying to achieve with HDR ? More saturation ? You could do this by just layering right ?

HDR- High Dynamic Range, Jed nailed it. I've been using photomatix then doing additional tonal mapping and enhancements in CS2. Photomatix takes all the information from the highlights and the shadows from the varying exposures and brings them together in a single image. Pretty neat stuff to play arround with. Ryan I am right there with you, I have CS3 but haven't installed it yet, I don't know why, maybe cause I'm used to CS2, maybe that'll be my goal for this week. Time will tell.

Jeez. All of you that are sitting around on your copies of CS3 are welcome to send them to me. I'll put them to good use! Walt, HDRI has been used in film for a while and also in computer graphics - 3D modeling. I actually heard the term in the context of 3D modeling before I knew what it was in the photography world. I think you can get some similar effects with dodging and burning but not as much. Also, if you look at an image like this one of, you would see what a nightmare it would be to do that work by hand: http://flickr.com/photos/stefand2/305306994/ It's a cool technique and I like the effect when it's not overdone... sometimes the results look a little cartoon'ey. Bess, yours is very nice. I had to look closely at the background (mostly the clouds) to catch that it was HDR. I thought it was just a dodge/burn effect.

It's not as effective as multiple exposures Walt but you can also create multiple RAW conversions - over/under/normal exposure and merge those. I think there's a stripped down demo version of Photomatrix available that works pretty good if you want to just try it.

Yep. You can use a trial (it's $99 to license) that will leave a watermark on the resulting photo but it let's you get a feel for what it can do. I haven't had much luck with Photomatix and just use Bridge/Photoshop. Maybe I need to try it again.

If you want to see a lot of HDR stuff check out Lens Envy at PixyBlog.com that's my friend mark, he's the one that got me to try it out. His work is incredible. He's also the featured photographer on Pixyblog right now. I have a few more HDR images on my blog, not too many as I am just getting into it but if you want to check 'em out you can at bessmarine.pixyblog.com or through my website (bessmarine.com) to "daily dose".

I prefer photoshop myself... mainly because I dont want to spend the $100 on photomatix. As mentioned above... you can do HDR in photoshop with a single exposure but there is a tricky way that it has to be done. Here is one I did with a bracketed image with -2, 0, +2 exposures.

Wow this HDR is highly fascinating to me. I'm Graphic Designer and dabble with Photography and use Photoshop daily. Do you have any websites/tips or tutorials on how to use HDR with Photoshop? Thanks

Not sure about CS3 but with CS2 I think you need to actually have bracketed exposures, you can't fool it with multiple RAW conversions of the same file. Photomatrix will work with different RAW conversions of the same image. I remember getting some very weird results with with CS2 and bracketed exposures using the HDR function so I didn't spend a whole lot of time with it. I've had better luck just blending the same image using masks.
