I really want to have a winch, but don't want to pay 1700 for one. I'm not so good with welding or anything like that, so im kind of stuck. Any suggestion is really appreciated.

go on myspace and give a shout to ryan at Pulldozer winches. I have had a couple winches and pulldozer is the only one that i have faith in when doing something life threatening.

He has a bunch of older models that he would probably let go for cheap, his customer service is really good too!

Pulldozer!!!

You can always try and look for some old frames and piece one together yourself. I built one with little to no knowledge about mechanics/metal working. I found pretty much everything I needed instruction-wise on the internet. Email me if you need help and feel like you want to build. gnarshredd6@gmail.com

It is nice to buy from a company though if you can since they usually have support/warrantys of some kind. Everyone's advice in this thread is good so far. Pulldozer and Yankmeister winches are both pretty solid. Yankmeister uses a pretty big engine if you want to deep-water start heavy people.
