New wheels for boat trailer

Does anyone have a source for the custom wheels for boat trailers. I have a Boat Mate trailer under my 07 Centurion Typhoon that I would like to change the wheels on.

I don't think there are wheels designed just for boat trailers. Just find the bolt pattern/offset and you should be good to go. Make sure the wheels you choose can handle the load of the boat too.

Joe, Your boat trailer probably is a 5 bolt lug pattern on a 4.5 inch diameter. Please verify, don't take my word on it. You can check ebay for these wheels and sometimes they come with tires etc for a pretty reasonable price. I have an extreme trailer and a year ago I got rid of the stock chrome over steel and got some aluminums with new tires for around $450.00 to $500.00 for a set of four. Oh and double check the weight ratings on the tires and wheels if you go this route. Under search in ebay type in trailer wheels and then the size rim; ie 14", 17" etc...

I tried Boatmate last year when I purchased my boat. I received two emails from Jerry Jones with Boatmate. The first email was a question about wheels that I had seen on their site. He told me that those were and old picture and he didn't think they were available. The second was to tell me the spec's 5 lug 4.5 inch bolt pattern, zero offset 3.25 min hub bore and 2000 lbs load rating.

I called him and he told me he would see what was available and get back to me. I haven't heard from him. I've tried calling wheel places and the first thing they want is year make and model. As soon as they find out it's for a trailer they tell you they can’t help you. There wheels are not for trailers.

What has been the groups experience with the wider rims and the low profile tires on the dual axle trailers? I've heard but not from someone that you have more problems out of them. Has anyone had bad experiences with them?

Joe, the lower profile your tires the greater the chance you can damage the rim from curbs etc. Also the lower the profile (larger the rim) the tire is the less "shock" absorbing qualities the tire will have.... Your boat won't have as cushy a ride. I checked ebay by typing in "14" trailer wheel" and had about 20 returns. All of the 14" trailer wheels that I have seen for sale are 1800lbs to 2000lbs for a 14" rim with 5 lug on a 4.5 inch pattern and no of set with a 3.25 + hub bore. Good luck. John

my trailer came with 20" rims and I like them a lot. My tires are two years old and I try to hit the lake as much as possible, have been to tahoe and powel from phoenix Az and still have alot of tread left. I have only ruined one tire from a curb but the rim made it ok.

I had mine custom built by Centerline. All I did was call them with the dimensions I wanted and they gave me a quote and delivery time. Simple.

Rims on the trailer totally finish off the whole look on a bad as tow vehicle boat/trailer set-up.

Twenty Twen Twens fo show Rik, lol! retail through les schwab with tires was about $2500 but if you are getting a new boat chances are your dealer will have a relationship with a tire and wheel place locally. I would check with them for better pricing.

The only negative I have found is that you really have to be a bit more cautious when towing. Curbing your rims is a painful experience should it happen. Other than that the tires are rated to carry the load easily. as far as any change in feeling or performance when towing is not something I have noticed if there is any difference. I tow with some pretty big vehicles that have a significant amount of power and weight to them so if an individual happened to be towing with a smaller tow vehicle you might notice something but I doubt it.

Joe, when I bought this boat in early 2005, rims that would fit my boat trailer larger than 17" were impossible for me to find. I think anything larger than an 18" rim/tire combo looks like you're trying too hard unless it's a huge boat and trailer. jmo

I think it's each to their own on preference. Some might say tinting the wind shield is trying to hard :-)

The wheels are really nothing out of the ordinary. They are a les schwab Amp brand of wheel. I looked at everything from the super $$$ to simple steel wheels and thought these were the best option that somebody didnt already have that I ran into on a regular basis. The guys down here do it pretty big so I had to step it up;-)

what size tires for a 20" or 18" wheel for a 2004 Centurion trailer?

The 18 inch wheel and tire combo that comes from boatmate has 255/45/R18 tires on them. I think it would be pretty hard to squeeze 20" wheels and tires on them. Also you have to change fenders when you go to 18" because the stock fenders are not wide enough. The stainless fenders are $500 a set.

I have mine under stock fenders... tight fit, but it is perfect...

Diggs-I'm wondering if your trailer wheels have a bit more positive offset to get them to tuck under the stock fenders?

I'm not sure, but I don't think the ones I have would fit under the stock fenders, just from eyballing. From boatmate, they put fenders that are 2" wider for the bigger tire/rim pkgs.

Diggs and I have the same boat, same year. the overall diameter with my 20" rims is the same as with his 18" rim and the load capacity of the tire is the same. I don't know about Diggs but nothing had to be done to mine to get them to fit what so ever that I can remember.

Yeah, that's why I'm wondering if the offset of the wheel is different then the offset of the boatmate wheel offerings.

Now that I'm looking at your wheel up close Brian, I can tell that the rims on yours have more of a positive offset then what I got from Boatmate.

That's good to know for the folks that are looking to install the rims aftermarket. Look for a positive offset rim (mostly designed for FWD cars) as opposed to Reverse or Zero offset wheels which will cause the rim to sit further out from the wheel hub or mounting surface.

Yeah not sure how the 21V differs from the 22 SSV trailer, but they fit. On my 21V I had to pull the mud sheild off the back of the fender, but on this one it was fine... Not sure if it was an offset thing or the fender is a bid wider on the 22? I was thinking it was 0 offset, but I could be way off....

pdxviperguy, you have a point. In my case, I just wanted everything black. ( I wish the deck was). I powder coated everything I could because I don't like a lot of chrome ("bling")etc. As for the wheels & tires, mine are 17" w/ 205/60 R16 tires. There is no offset. I never knew they could do different tire/wheel sizes together.
