I am looking at putting a 12 inch sub under the drivers area on my 07 Supra 22. I am going with a custom enclosure for the area and want the most bang with a one sub setup. I am considering the following subs JL12 W7, Kicker L7, Wetsounds XS 12. I haven't really started on the amp setup, but plan to after I pick a sub. Any help on the amp suggestion would also be great. I am looking for any opinions and thoughts on the following subs(or others), what made your mind up on one or the other.

The rest of my setup is as follows: 2 WS Pro 485 w Cadence ZRS3002- Tower, 6 WS XS 650 w JL-2150 inboard.

Thanks for the help!

Patrick,

I just bought the same boat and am nearing completion on a plexi sub box for a JL 10w7 in a ported box in the drivers area footwell. The 10w7 in a ported box needs 1.5 cubic feet of air space, which is comparable to (or more than) what most 12" subs need... I have test-fitted the whole thing, but have not installed it yet. I plan to have it installed by the weekend.

If you have a heater, I doubt you would be able to fit a 12w7 in there in a sealed or ported enclosure...the footrest takes up a lot of otherwise usable space. If you would like, I can try and write up my specs, measurements, and angles for the footrest -- so you don't have to repeat the whole process. It could be helpful no matter which option you go with.

As far as an amp, I use JL amps simply because I trust them and they do what they say they will (if not more)...but they are spendy and there are many less expensive and equally as good options.

patrick I have the same boat. I have L7 kicker 12 under the footwell. It takes up no useable space. I didnt' have to move the fascia board at all, just cut a square in it and mounted a square box ( filled with 50% polyfill) behind it. I also have 2 10w6's underneath the rear seat. I switched bags in the rear to the GG bags. They are also in "wasted space"

JL is way overatted in boats IMO. Save your cash and buy a better amp than a "arguably " better speaker. I have mine being pushed by a mmats amp.

I should add that one of my goals was to keep the drivers footwell from feeling cramped. From the bottom of the factory footrest, mine is out 4". Obviously, you could bring it out further for more space.

Also, I've never heard the Wetsounds subs, but would love to. If they are anything like the rest of their gear (and I'd expect they are), they should be awesome... There isn't one review online anywhere that I could find.

Cal, thanks for the info. If you could send the specs you came up with that would be awesome. I do have the heater, and don't want it to be too cramped under my feet. I am with you on not finding much feedback on the WS sub online so far.

Adam, I have seen a few setups with the Kicker and like the look, it is my first choice right now- mostly based on price and specs. Do you have any pics/specific specs of your setup? I am guessing you have it setup with the sub projecting toward you?

I can get you some pics. Yes, the sub is firing out towards me. All I did was move the large fuse box that moutns to the fiberglass wall up under the dash. I played with it in a few different directions and found that to be the best. I have roughly 600 RMS going to the sub, it can definately handle more. But with 2 other subs in the boat I can limit this one to prevent to much dash rattle. I've had this setup for roughly 6 months, and have only used the baot a handful of times and I've already had a few washers and nuts fall down itn he footwell area.

Let's see some pics Adam. I haven't seen the L7 installed yet...

Adam, Pics would be great. I was worried about the dash getting rattled to death. I read somewhere about an install where they took apart the dash and insulated it to prevent the rattle effect. I also read about using Dynomat to help with the vibration in that area.

I had a 15 Arc Audio sub underneath my drivers seat with custom box built for my Supra 21v and OMG that was seriously all one could need and then some. Talk about busting my ear drums coupled with my Wetsounds the boat rocked. I always had to turn the bass down when driving otherwise, I'd be death after a few minutes. I had a seperate 900W amp just for the 15 speaker.

FYI, from underneath I had to push up on the dashboard and stick a couple of black wash cloths in between the dash and molding of the boat to keep the dash from rattleing. That $2 fix worked perfect, took about 15 seconds, and it couldn't be seen. All of the gauges worked just fine the past year.

That 15 is huge, very nice. That may be a little more then I need.

After more research today, I am considering the JL 12W3-2 ohms or 12w6-4ohms over the 12w7. I would use a mono block D amp at 500 rms-2 ohm or 4 ohms to power it. I think it will do better in the space under the driver area without rattling it to death. Anyone use either of these speakers in a boat setup? Cal, I am very interested to know how the 10w7 works in your boat. I bet it may out perform the 12w3 and even maybe the 12w6? What was your thought on going with the 10w7?

Patrick I've got 3 12w6v2's in my boat. One under the drivers dash, one in the passenger storage compartment, and one in the rear trunks. They slam, giving them 500 watts a piece, and all are in sealed enclosures 1.25 cu ft.

I'd go with the 12w6 v2 or v3...b/c that is what I currently have.

With the 485's you are going to want some booming bass. I would be worried that a 10 inch woofer would be a little to tight. I use to own the 12w3 before moving up to the 12w6 and I am happy I made the upgrade.
Old     (05mobiuslsv)      Join Date: Apr 2006       02-12-2008, 5:08 PM Reply
Murphy where did you come up with v3, did you mean w3?
Old     (murphy_smith)      Join Date: Dec 2005       02-12-2008, 5:11 PM Reply
Sorry...got confused w/ the w3v3. You are correct it is the 12w6v2.
Old     (pfort)      Join Date: Mar 2007       02-12-2008, 5:49 PM Reply
Murphy, I was thinking the same thing! I don't want to get the 12w3 and have buyers remorse that I didn't go with the 12w6. What amp are you using for yours?

Nu bu, I can only imagine your boat rocks with all 3 subs. What amp are you using for the subs?

I'm running 2 of them off a JL 1000/1 and the other off the sub channel on a kicker 700.5.

I run a 12W6 with a Boston Acoustics amp in an '06 21V and it sounds great. I would definitely go JL Audio if I had to do it again. For me, one sub is plenty loud even on the "old school gangster rap mood" days.

Do you know which Boston Acoustics amp are you running? I didn't see a mono d class amp on there website.

Run the 5th channel, mono to the sub. Other 4 channels to 4 JL VR series tower speakers. Earmark in Lewisville did the install.

You've only got 250 watts running to it and you think it sounds good?

yep

That amp must be severely underrated then..

It can sound good without being pushed hard nu bu. Obviously it would hit harder if he were to get at least 400 watts to it but I still think it can sound good a little under powered.

Patrick, why dont you just go with the 12W7 and pair it with the Cadence ZRs-6000D? That would knock pretty damn good!

Boston SPG555. 1 Cube. Tons of clean output.

I am running an older Precision Power PCX 1250 to match my Precision Power PCX 4125. It puts 500 watts to the sub. I have been running it for 5 years in the hot texas sun and it has never overheated or quit on me. You can pick them up on ebay or craigslist for under $150.

If I had to do it over again. I would match the JL 500/1 with the JL Audio 12w6v2. There are so may slightly used ones on ebay and you can find a great deal on that amp. Seems like it would also match you other JL amp.

IMO...Boston's are great...but they are going to get pricey

Patrick, the W7 was left over from car system I had about 5 years ago -- otherwise I probably would not have bought it for a boat install because of the price and large box volume. The sub is very nice, it absolutely pounded in my old boat, which I just pulled it out of. My friend with an X2 (I feel like I always reference him this way) has two JL 12w3's and we both agree that the single 10w7 is louder. But as much as I love my w7, they are expensive and take up a lot of room which is not ideal for boats. If I were sticking to JL and doing it over, I would have bought two JL 12w6's and put one on the drivers side and one on the passenger side. W6's take about half as much box volume as W7's. As it is, I'm considering an upgrade to a second 10w7 and second JL 500/1 amp next year.

If you were me starting from sctratch, you would go to wakeside.com and buy one of the Wetsounds XS12's and try it out -- then post a review of it on this site so that the rest of us who want to know if it's as good as the rest of their gear will have our question answered. If you didn't like it, you could always sell it on this site for close to what you paid, then you could go to the JL 12W6 using the same box...without looking up the specs, I'd guess they are close enough to make it work.

But that's only if you were me... ;)

It looks like I am going to go with the Wetsounds XS 12 and pair it with the Cadence ZRs-6000D. I was able to get great deals on both of these. I will post up once I get it all set up and give some feedback.

That's a lot of amp for that sub my man let us know how it holds up.

I checked it'll be great at 2ohms!

Hate, I talked to Tim about it and running it in parallel in 2 ohm should really kick. I will post up a review after I get it all set up.
