There is a 1987 SN 2001 for sale about 5 hours from me and was curious on your guys opinions reguarding the boat. Looks to be in pretty good shape. Only thing is, he says its had some fiberglass work done and the drive shaft, rudder and some other things need to be re-installed. Not sure why the fiberglass work was done. I'm going to call him today and talk to him about it. As well as ask him some other things requarding the boat to see if its worth the road trip to look at it and drag it home. Anyways, here's what his ad says...

"1987 SKI NATIQUE, 351 FORD, THIS BOAT IS IN VERY NICE SHAPE - IN AND OUT. MOTOR RUNS GREAT WITH 840 HRS TOTAL BOAT TIME, TEAK SWIM DECK, CD PLAYER, NEW BATTERY, NEW STARTER, NICE TRAILER. I'M SELLING FOR CHEAP PRICE BECAUSE BOAT IS IN NEED OF A LITTLE WORK. BOTTOM OF BOAT HAS HAD SOME FIBERGLASS REPAIR WORK DONE. TWO THINGS: THE DRIVE STRUT AND THE STEERING RUDDER NEED TO BE RE-INSTALLED ON BOTTOM OF BOAT. I'M SELLING BOAT WITH ALL PARTS NEEDED TO FIX, INCLUDING A NEW PROP, NEW DRIVE SHAFT, NEW DRIVE STRUT AND NEW RUDDER. I BOUGHT BOAT AS IS BECAUSE I THOUGHT I COULD FIX, BUT IT IS A LITTLE BEYOND MY ABILITY. LOCAL BOAT SHOP SAID THEY COULD FIX FOR APPROX. $600-$800. "

He wants $4800 for it. What else should I look for beside stingers and compression? Thanks guys. Here's some pics of the boat...

You will get an incredible wake out of that boat but maybe you already know that. I'd recommend that you also ask on the2001.com People there are very helpful about these things. What I would wonder is if the fiberglass work and the fact that the prop, driveshaft, rudder, etc, are not installed is because someone hit a submerged object? It is a good price but I'll bet you could get it from him for lower because of the hassle you'll have.

Is there a boat mechanic nearby to the guy's place you can take it?

You may want him to take it there and have the shop call you with an estimate of everything that's wrong and how much it will be.

You will want to check the floor for soft spots. If there are soft spots and they're directly behind the engine compartment that's okay because it's just a piece of wood and easy to replace. If there are soft spots in other places then you have trouble. Depending on how much work you want to do though it could make for a fun project to tear the floor out and install ballast tanks.

Anyway again, the2001.com would be your best bet for good info. It is a killer boat though, I love my 88! Good luck!

Oh yeah I'm aware of the wakes! And I'm thinking he hit something pretty big with the prop and or rudder and did some pretty serious damage. I'm going to ask him who fixed it and how much work they did. And yeah, I posted the exact same topic on 2001.com. If this works out, I'd be stoked. Thanks for the help

Sounds like he smashed the strut and the rudder, prop too. Sounds like it tore up the glass either at the strut, shaft bushing, rudder, or all three. It should be evident when you inspect it.

These is not an uncommon occurence, but replacing all the underwater gear is probably the best course of action. I would think you might need to replace all four components, Shaft, strut, rudder, prop. If he has all these new and the fiberglass is done correctly, it's no big deal for a mechanic. If these parts are missing or the originals that are damaged, you are looking at some $$.

I would in no way install any of these components if they were damaged. The shaft will be bent, strut destroyed, prop mangled, and the rudder trashed. The prop and rudder may be salvaged, but need to be reworked by a pro. Forget the shaft, no way to get it back to true.

Good luck, that boat is a beauty and is worth putting back together for sure. If the engine is strong, it's a helluva boat.

Oh ya, ask if or when he last replaced the gaskets on the risers. Make sure the boat shop looks at that.

I bought a 1983 complete and in running condition for $4500. I have put 50-75 hours on it since. The 2001's are great boats. I would recomend him lowering the price since the boating season is ending and the hassle you might have to deal with. If anything is for sure, fixing a boat takes time and money. Sometimes more money than you thought it would take.
