Best Boat for the Money....Moomba Outback V???

Hello,

This is my first post on the forum, although I have been lurking for a few weeks now. My brother and I are currently looking into a new boat, we have an 18 foot stern drive currently. The wake just isn't big enough, we have gotten to the point where we want to do bigger tricks, but just can't get the height needed.

We are looking into the Moomba Outback V, because we really don't want a used boat and like the option of the fresh water cooling (closed loop)since we will be running in primarily salt water.

Is this our best choice, we really don't want to spend an absolute fortune so that puts a whole bunch out of the question. If not, what are some other good alternatives?

Also, the nearest Moomba dealer is like 2 hours away, could we get warranty work done at a local marina or would we have to go there?

I have that boat and like it. Get the 325 MPI engine. I do not have the closed loop water cooling system.

You will need the dealer for warranty work. mx you can get anywhere - if you trust them to do it right.

Read this thread bro. It gets pretty brutal after about 100 posts and at some point goes into muscle cars but it pretty much answers a lot of questions. I came to the same conclusion that you seem to be leaning towards. My Outback V arrives in 2 weeks.

For a similar price you can look at Sanger's V210. It can be had for about $35k new and kicks up a stellar wake. They may not be near you though...

Whats nice about them is that they use a Mercruiser engine and and mercruiser tech (most boat shops) can do your repairs. Sometimes when you are far away from the shop you can work out a contract with the local guys & your dealer.

S Dorgan, Sorry for the Hi-jack, but I really, really think you should consider looking into Sanger boats, they are awesome boats and one of the last companies to built their boats completely by hand.

depoint50ae - That day we were running approx. 1800 lbs. with a decent crew. When I don't have the people I add another 600 lbs. Generally I run 300 on each side of the motor, 400 in the locker, and 18 PoP Products bags ( www.pop-products.com ) under the seats (usually 8 in the bow, and 10 distributed throughout the rest of the seats). What's nice about this set up, is that all the weight is hidden and not on the floor. But when I run the additional 600 I have to put on the floor on top of the locker.

Water over the bow...I can't say it's never happened but not usually.

Ok, I have to admit, that is a killer looking wake! Not to say others aren't, but those pics show a sweet wake.

Now as for the Outback V. I was actually very impressed with this boat. As most of us know it's the old LSV with a few changes. I really liked the look of the boat. One thing I really liked was the sun deck on the back. Moomba bumped it up and made it higher which changed the look of the boat in my opinion. I thought is was sharp looking. And no one can touch the price. I don't know how much a Sanger V210 goes for, but if the price quoted above is correct, the Outback V is still $5K less. From what I've heard, it's the only V-drive you can get into well under $40K with the basic options we all want. And like someone else said, it is a proven hull. Great starter wakeboard boat! I kept coming back to the Outback V at the boat show (the three straight days I went, do I need a life or what?

) due to how good the boat looked and at that price! I was very impressed! My first boat was an Outback DD and I loved it. I can only imagine the heaven I would have been in if my first new boat was the Outback V.

Dorgan- I say go for it!! It's an incredible boat for the $$$$ You'll love boarding behind a V-drive!!

I agree with Kraig on the Outback V. Have you guys seen the outback V in the Waterski Magazine boat buyers guide? Sick looking wake and a good ski wake, too. I don't know if you ski or not?

dang that wake looks bigger than mine. I have a 24ssv with a 340 and 2000 lbs in ballast. That wake is amazing.

Isn't the Outback/Mobius LSV the new hull? The Outback V is the old LSV hull unless I'm wrong. I've ridden behind a 2004 Mobius V, fairly nice wake but pretty small. I'd recommend the LSV instead if you can afford it. No matter what you choose, you'll feel like you died and went to heaven after your I/O. Have fun and you won't regret it. Skier's Choice=work less/play more imo.

I like both boats.

Upside - The Sanger is much narrower and is easier to sink for a big wake.

Downside - Sanger is much smaller inside and doesn't have a very comfortable sunpad. A great boat for pure wakeboarding but not so much for hanging out.

Upside - Moomba is much more modern looking (IMO) has much less sway in the tower, is roomier inside, and I prefer Indmar over Mercruiser.

Downside - Moomba doesn't feel as plush interior wise, very low free board inside, and feels somewhat less solid on the water. The boat is going to be more hang out friendly but will need more weight than the Sanger for a serious wake.

In summary, both boats have a very loyal following and are excellent entry level v-drives.

Sanger or Moomba either way you would probably be happy. I just sent a friend to the boat show, he has about $40k to spend, I feel these boats are his options. If you like to sit high in the boat you will prefer the Sanger, if prefer to sit deeper in the boat you will prefer the Moomba. Focus on the differences that you cannot change.

E Dub- If you really did get a loaded XLV for $40K I applaud you!! But, I doubt it. The discrepency may be in what we all think is Loaded. For me, a very nicely equipped boat would include PP, racks, full ballast system 3 bag, heater, bimini, tonneau covers, pop up cleats, stereo with amp and sub and of course the wake plate. Then on top of that there's the stainless steel rubrail, docking lights, lights on the tower to name a few things that others might include in loaded. But if you got that boat with the aforementioned items I have to throw a Kudos out to you and learn your technique!! Congrats on the new ride! I bought my XLV new in 2004 and have been loving it ever since!!

And has Docking lights, trailer guide pads, and a boat cover. 3 year Full boat warranty

yeah i belive him because i was quoted like 42 or 43 out the door on an 05 xlv loaded, everything but a 340. You should be able to pick up an 06 lsv for a little less than 34.

The suggested retail on mine before anything was added was $39,995.
And I got mine with everything for less than that.
So it is possible to get it loaded for that price before TAX.

Well I must have got took cuz I got pp, board racks, tandem axel trailer, sirius ready head unit, interior speakers,4 tower speakers,tonneau cover, 10 in sub ,gravity 3 ballast,heater, wake plate, fuel injected 325hp motor,depth finder,laser etched pop up cleats, 500 bucks in store credit and storage cover for about 42 and I thought I did pretty good. Guess I could have done better.

That is pretty good. As you can see I do not have a stereo in there at all.

Not only that but I got to talk to Rick Tinker ( Skier's Choice President) for about 1 hour going over all aspects of the boat?
I have owned 2 Supra's Previously and so he threw in a couple of freebees' for me .

Why so many non-believers when someone says what they bought their boat for? If they say it, good enough for me. My Skier's Choice dealer is a bond trader by day, and runs his dealership on weekends. He admits that just selling boats isn't going to pay his bills. He does a great volume and can afford to go low-very low to get new people into the sport and I applaud him.

Well we went to the Atlantic City Boat show and bought (put a deposit on) a leftover 2005 Mastercraft X-2. Comes with closed loop cooling, perfectpass wakeboard pro, swivel racks, 3 bag ballast system, stereo, cover, galvanized trailer, 310hp motor, and an extended warranty.

Can anyone tell me what is a good deal on this boat? or at least what sort of discount I should be getting for a leftover. Also if you think this is a good decision.

You will love it. Wait until you load it up and hit the wake for the first time. It's a lot difference than an I/O wake. You'll get used to real quick, tho.

Need to know more about the options. Does it have a heater, tower speakers, lights, shower, true Mastercraft trailer (single or tandem), pop up cleats, teak platform, etc? How much do they want for it?

Ya got any wake pics and set up info for your 24SSV... there is another thread on the go looking for some... help a brother out!

Just to comment on "huge wakes"... not saying that the Sanger V210 wake isn't nice... but any wake that has very little ramp/transition to it will make it look "bigger" than a wake of the "same" height that has some ramp/transition.

Its like the 6' tall skinny guy or the 6' tall fat guy... who looks taller?

As far as the Moomba Outback V being the best boat for the money... that depends how much money ya got

I just ordered a LSV 06 fully loaded with a drive out price of 40,500, is that what you guys are seeing around the country? Here is a list of options: tri color,325 HP, PP,depth finder,4 channel amp,GravityIII, pop up cleats, 3 year warranty, CD with rmote, 4 tower speakers, and light bar, wake plate, board racks,bimini top and a tandem trailer. I traded in my 2000 Tige 21V so I cant wait to get this in.
