I was always under the impression that it didn't matter which way you installed an impeller, because as soon as it starts turning it will bend to the proper way.

I installed mine on the weekend (Merc 5.7 MAG MPI), and after shoe-horning the thing in, I found that it would not bend at all no matter which way I turned the impeller flywheel.

Since I didn't remember which direction it was when I removed it in the fall I wanna be sure that I put it in the right way.

Anyone know for sure?

Thanks

You could disconnect the coil wire from the distributor cap, then bump the ignition to turn the engine over. It won't start. You just want to note the rotation direction. Knowing that, insert the impeller so that the fins are trailing the direction of the rotation. Use some soapy water get the impeller started into the pump.

Same as above, but remove the lanyard, this will keep the engine from firing also. Another thing to do is to look at the cover, it should have a shadow of which direction the old one was sitting in.
