Lead weight?

I know there is Pop Products, but does anyone know where to purchase or better yet pick up FREE lead for weighting my boat?

Sometimes tire places will give away their used balancing lead weights, or they used to anyway. Check with your local places, I got a couple hundred pounds from one five or six years ago. Just threw um in some small rubber maids.

Yeah, tire weights are a good cheap/free alternative. Thats what we use. Get some nice small bags and load em up and your good to go.

Use water bladders, they're safer. In an accident lead weights can take your boat to the bottom. Fat Sacks don't.

I also wondered what the impact would be if your boat sank and it was full of lead? Would they consider that an enviromental spill or hazard and really nail you? I like the idea of lead because it takes up less room the only thing i don't like is with ballast tanks and fat sacs when where done riding we can empty them all and cruise with out dragging all that extra weight around? with lead your kind of stuck with it!

I doubt it. Fishermen go out with tackle boxes full of lead can you get cited for losing a lure.

And in regards to fat sacks not sinking a boat, wouldn't the motor be heavy enough to take the boat down in the case of a hull breach?

You can cut a Nautique in half and it won't sink. Not to start some boat brand thread, but it's pretty interesting. Not that I've tried it, but you can go the factory tour and see for yourselves.
For years I have gone to tire stores as well and gotten what they would give away. I then put it into 4" pvc pipes, about 2-3 feet long, and then cap it on each end. The lead is pretty nasty to your health from what I hear. I would avoid melting it, cuz the fumes are even worse.
I recently got the fly high system integrated into my boat. You take the overflow hose off the hard tank, put it into the bottom hole of the sac, and then just get another fitting to hook up another hose to go out of the normal overflow out the side of the boat. Hard tank fills up, overflows into the sac and then the sac overflows out of the boat. Drain the hard tank and it first empties the sac and then the normal tank. Pretty simple and only need the sacs, few extra fittings and hose. No more extra pumps around the boat.

Previously I was using some lead tire weights in small tool bags from Home Depot ("workforce" tool bags, cost about $7 each and hold 60 lbs.)
I got tired of trailering an extra 500 lbs to the water, so fat sacs are much better. Plus your insurance co. can't reject a claim if your boat sinks and it's full of lead.

Thanks for all you input so far. What I had in mind was about 400-600lbs of lead, not 1500lbs. I would use it to place around the boat to shape the wake with additional ballast. The boat is at a private lake so I do not have to worry about trailer-ing it all over the place.

They are hazmat no one can legally give them to you.
