I don't know if there's been a thread like this before or not but I'd like to know some of your best (or worst) reasons why a buddy has bailed on riding. I know there are some good ones out there...

Haha so to start, here's a couple I've had to deal with...

1. "Sorry dude, I can't today. My gf's horse broke its leg."

&

2. "Not today man, my sister didn't get into the sorority she wanted."

(boredom thread, heh)

Worst: "I'm getting too old to ride every day"--Usually coming from a 25 year old.

Best: "I'm building a new rail today. Come shred it tomorrow."

"Sorry man, I have a bunch of work around the house to do. I need to mow the lawn." Really??? You're going to turn down a ride behind a premier wakeboard boat so you can mow the lawn? You'd think they could save that one until later in the day...

We have super slim pickings around here when it comes to LOCAL wakeboarders at Lake Powell

"Too early" We pretty much went out the same time every day, leaving Page AZ at 6:30 and getting on the water at 7:00 am

"I have to work"

"Too cold" water is at about 70* mind you when this excuse started to be used

------------------------------------------------------

Then when we have no third or even no second and try to thumb a ride (from visitors, not locals):

"Sorry i got a full boat already" lucky, wish i had your problem

"We are eating lunch now"... ... for the next couple of hours

"The water is kinda choppy now"... ... this is one of my favorite, people who have been to powell should know that glass is hard to come by in the summer. quit being picky. it wasn't too choppy for me, just take me and watch haha.

haha, that would be pretty close to my excuse if i actually had an opportunity to go more than once with the situation i find myself in. it took me a lot of talk to convince my wife why i needed more than once a week... but i can never find a full decent crew to make it happen anyway. meh...

season is over now anyway. boat needs repair. but is was a nice season. can't wait till next year.

Being in Mich, I realy dont hear too many excuses cuz we only get a few solid months except " Its too rough or the lake is too busy" which to be honest is valid in some cases. Well usually just wait it out till a sunset sesson. We could wake up earlier but tend to get a hung over

"Dude, i forgot I had to work" - Really, you forgot you had to work???
"It's too windy" - when we're going to ride in a completely protected lake....
"Too cold" - Man, you have a drysuit!
"So and so is borrowing my sacs" - and that means the boat doesn't work?
"I was taking a nap" - OR "I just got up"

All Winter Long from Multiple People: I'd love to go out wakeboarding this summer, let's go every friday night...I would so love ride behind that boat......etc.

me, to 4 or 5 people: you wanna ride?
"yeah man for sure"
me: ok i'll pick you up around 4:30.
4:30 comes around...swing by to get em.
"oh sorry dude, i gotta watch my little bro."
"oh sorry i forgot i have to pick up my sister in (town)"
"ah dude i'm too tired i'm just gonna sleep."

Nothin pisses me off more than that. I spend 15 to 20 minutes hooking up the boat, loading up food, getting ready, and EVERYONE makes an excuse to not go. At least pick up the phone and call me so I know you're not going, instead of waiting until after. don't feel like goin that day, just tell me. I'm not gonna be offended. but man does it piss me off when I load everything up, all for nothin. This had to happen minimum of 3 days each week, we'd ride MAYBE once a week sometimes. If you make plans, stick to it. Or tell me you're not sure, and i'll wait until you ARE sure.

Fun thread to read through! some excuses are pretty funny. Looks like Mathis got burnt in his own thread! haha

Good thing, we have a bunch of guys with boats up here. Sombody is always out and if ya don't wanna go then it's your loss. Usually the oppourtunity to board and drink a few beers is hard to pass up. Oh and the chances of seeing bakini's mowing the lawn or hanging out at home are slim to none unless you are watching Art Man. Don't call the guys that bail anymore, or the girls for that matter.
Old     (flydenrict)      Join Date: Nov 2009       11-04-2010, 2:56 PM Reply
My circle of friends who ride is small and of the ones that can actually drive the boat is even smaller. Usually when someone bails it kills the session because i dont have another driver. After the initial anger i can laugh about it.

the no call, sleep-in is always fun. Only to call them and hear them say "i woke up 15 min late and figured you had gone without me." Dude i need you to drive!!
I also like the "i dont feel like it" when we haven't ridden in a week and a half and the conditions are PERFECT.

A lot of common ones here, so I feel your pain or annoyance most of the times.
I would but I'd rather take a nap.
Oh I wanted to go but I fell asleep.
I've got to study.
Wife is making me do chores around the house.
Work even though they said they could go the day before.
Too early, too cold, too late.
Girls are the best. Invite me next time you go. Invited on the spot, yep I'll go sounds good. Next week when you see them oh yeah I couldn't when are you going next. Invited right then. Rinse and repeat the whole summer.
I retired from wakeboarding.

I don't have any "cant ride" but I've heard the "im getting too old" or "this hurts or that hurts", usually when I tell the guys I ride with to try something new. They are below mid 30's, I feel bad if they are actually falling apart at that age.

I knocked myself out on my car door.

My Puppy died.

My whole family is vomiting, and I am too.

I have to give a police statement after witnessing a mugging.

I have to pick my Cousin up from the airport. She is coming back to support her sister who has just come out of the closet.

My grandma has alzeimers and went missing. I had to look for her.

I contracted a deadly virus.

My pet turtle had babies and is going thru post partum. She needs all the support I can give. So I can't make it.

The worst excuse is no excuse.....

The other day I had plans to ride with a guy on my boat at 10 am. When I get up that morning I find a text from the guy sent at 4:30 am saying "sorry, I can't make it today". That was it, no explanation, no nothing other than "I can't make it".

It may not be that big of a deal to those who are single and without kids, but when you juggle your schedule with the wife to make sure someone can be home to watch the kids while you go to the lake, you damn sure better not cancel on me the day of!!! Hall passes from the wife take time to schedule!!

Every weekend through the summer I get no shows. I generally make calls Thurs/Fri to set up Sat+Sun crew. Usually get a couple takers, agree on whatever time, I always try for 7:00. Invariably I get up early, get the boat hooked up, pack up all the gear, etc. Then sit, and wait, and wait... 7:30 rolls around and no one shows up, or only one shows up. Make calls, no one answers, yadda yadda. Eventually get a hold of people and it's ...

"I drank way too much last night" - Yeah thanks ass, if I knew we weren't going I probably would have drank last night too

"I didn't hear my alarm" - You somehow manage to get up at the same time for work every day?

"Didn't know we were still going" - When have I ever said I'd do something and not done it? Never.

"I don't have any money, I'd feel bad" - And this matters why? You never throw down for gas anyway. You should feel worse that now I can't ride since you were my third.

To the drinkers that say I want to go out too early, I say let me know when you want to go, we can do mid-day and deal with the wind and idiots, or evening and try to catch good water. The response is back to "busy, parties, drinking, family events, etc. ... we'd have to be in by 3:00" - WTF then let's go at 7:00 and be in by 1:00!

Alternatively when I call around to find a crew Thurs/Fri I get the usual excuses, parties, drinking, etc. and they say to make plans earlier. So I start trying to make plans at least a week or two ahead of time to line up a crew. Then I get...

"Oh I don't know what I'm doing that day, ask me a day or two before that day" - So you don't have any plans and I'm offering you something fun to do that you won't accept because you'd rather be getting drunk but will fall back on riding if you can't find a party? Great, that's cool, just tell me you'd rather get plastered than ride. Then I can just plan something productive for my day.

LOL - this thread is awesome. I thought it was just my "guy" crew...

(the girl crew consists of my wife, and 2 daughters which pull me whenever I need them too...)

I have a neighbor who claims his grandma has a house on bass lake and he grew up there laughing at the stupid campers in the dirt while he had a home and a ski boat right on the water...so, I ask him to come out with us...(pretty old fogies at this point in the sport). I used to ski, never anymore, just board...but my other buddy - prolly 50 yo shreds the ski still.

So - he finally agrees to dawn patrol mid summer, 80degree water and 80 degrees by 7am so no lame "It's too cold" excuses...

Well, this guy is known for being ball-less and 7am rolls around on Saturday...no wind...perfect...and he was at the Gym ...wtf...dude? I'll never ask that guy out on my boat. I have had his wife on my boat though...lol...

I get the "I gotta check with my wife" line from one of my regulars (or not very regulars) all the time. I couldn't even get him out this entire season.

OK - and now for the best....and this should probably go in the all timer group.

So, the guy I mentioned earlier that shreds at skiiing was breeding his dog...and he needed to "supervise and assist"

...HAHAHAHAHA....????ok, man. have fun with that....

So....my crew is my awesome wife, and 2 cool daughters 90 percent of the time.

Some of the ones I remember,
" Im really soar from working out this morning" - Are you to soar to get in the boat and just hang out???
"I think im going to a baseball game" - lame
"I think there are tornadoes watches for the area" - She ended up coming, but it was pouring rain the whole ride to the lake. When we got there, nothin but sun.

I have a great crew, but I'm mid-30's with 4 kids so if I get a pass, my 20-something single live-at-home crew who isn't asked to pay a cent other than drive needs to be there! You got a 12 minute buffer while ballast is being filled at the dock.

worst: my GF's sister just got engaged last night so we are going over there to start throwing ideas about the wedding and help set a date.

best: glad I was only 10 minutes late as I had to stop and ice the 2 cases of beer I bought for after the pulls.

Bad Excuses

1. When I was at the best level, personally, riding, I'd drop by my best friend's house at flat calm times. I'd be ready to go. He'd be lounging on a chaise next to his controlling girlfriend and tell me "**name omitted** will kill me if I go right now.** Yeah. You're too busy huh. Then my mom would pull me.

2. I am so guilty of this one. Air is like 2 degrees too cold than what I want it to be. Waaah. Actually, medically, I have low iron and get cold very very easily. Waaaahhh. Get a wetsuit pansy (but about my whittle feet?).

3. The good boat is broken (the SAN), but the other slighly less, but still awesome boat (86' 2001) works fine, yet we don't keep it weighted. So instead of taking the 15 minutes to pump the bags (we have a very spaghetti setup on that boat) we forgo riding and I instead tie a rope to a tree and do barefooting tubleturns.

4. We burn up a solid hour chatting on shore and then realize we've lost the glass calm water and now the water is only perfect.

All of these are real. Sometimes I think I am the only one with good ones in my gang. Even then I usually at least skate - or do what we call "splashy fun". No inverts, no tech crap, just - splashy fun.

Good Excuses

1. Wife is on her way to the lake and happens to have my little daughter and littler son with her and I was "given" the entirety of Friday night, and over half of the Saturday morning to ride or float around and listen to The Clipse while she watched my little buddies.

2. Following hard falls, undercarriage punches, rolled eyelid, or doing something that makes an old injury hurt.. A really bad, you know, top 10'ish one will likely ruin your day with the headache by itself. Get back in the boat. It's now someone else's turn.

3. Water is too choppy. Even for the slightly narrower board I ride and my height/weight, I get bounced around a bit. My buddy, who's 150lbs soaking wet and rides a Belmont, can't even hold an edge in even moderate chop (that's probably more his fault - a technical lacking on his part). Most of these newer board really seem to be designed for calm water, but that's not always cooperative.

4. I just don't generally enjoy morning riding. 930-10:15 is about the when I am ready to go. I am up and ready to go. I always ride first. Apparently my crew's threshold for morning riding tolerance is more severe than mind.

5. Chronic pain. Just plain old straight up chronic pain.

It's funny how all these excuses just seem like really good reasons to go wakeboarding!! PMSing wife is probably better left alone, leaves needing to be raked will be there when you return. How are these things more important than getting your shred on?!

I can't believe you guys let the people that disrespect your time like that, back on the boat. That's a one and done" situation for me.

You guys need to tell your sissy riding partners that there are "no excuses, play like a champion".

This one is the best and so true. We always sit and talk about how perfect the lake is and about all of the tricks we are going to try for just long enough that the wind gets on it, another boat hops on our pass, or a pack of jet skiers come out, and do we ever blame ourselves? Never! It is always the other guys fault for being on our water lol

Kyle - exactly. What I meant was that in the time we spent screwing around, the lake went from glass, to only "awesome". I do want to clarify that we do ride in these conditions, but - man - glass is glass. Oops we missed it.

Hey Small Light: PMSing wife? No. Try Father being absent for some if not most summer Friday evenings, then most Saturday & Sunday mornings, leaving her alone to chase around my kids while I go out on the lake and pretend I am still good at wakeboarding. Maybe... you should.... pump the brakes? That whole equation will probably change in a year or two when the kids are old enough to tube and aren't as intimidated at the noise of the boat, the speed, etc. So, really? Seriously? You, a 30 year old of some sort who's had plenty of time to grow up, are still saying PMS'ing? I got past saying 'ish like that when I was 12 years old.

Another "bad excuse" at least for me, I thought of is hangovers. I DO NOT drink & ride. I don't encourage it, though plenty still happens on my boat. Just not me or my driver. When I ride it's like, soccer practice or something. Even though I am only OK at wakeboarding, I take the time very seriously. If I drank the night before and then at 930 find myself wanting to die of a hangover, I lose that morning - and up here in New England - every weekend set counts due to the short season.

Hey Erik, sorry I offended you and it necessitated you calling me a 12 year old. My typical approach to Wakeworld is poking a little fun and not taking it too seriously. It involves speaking in generalities and not identifying every single users personal issues and/or legitimate excuses.

You, being a savvy ol' internet guru who has perused plenty a wake-related website, are still nit-picking at every chance you get? Maybe it's not the wife that's PMSing...

Worst-- The "too early" or "too cold" ALL THE TIME excuse, but are always looking to ride. I have a drysuit, heater, blankets and a hot shower on board..... These folks are proably the first ones in line for an August at noon ride.. My winter riders get that call......

And a close second-- Those guys that like to get a call, but never commit one way or another

The best excuse? Antbug getting up at 4a, driving to BV from Reseda and waiting for me to show at 6a so we could cancel due to bad conditions..... But................... he woulda rode anyway if I wanted to.

Best Excuse -- Bro..... I can't! Last time I rode with you I waded up and tore my *****!

Worst Excuse - Bro.....I can't! Last night I met this chick that ended up being a guy but I was too drunk to care.... anyway I woke up this morning and it looks like I tore my *****!
