I am just learning how to ride. We are guessing at what works best. We are using a Malibu with a WEDGE. No ballast, but 4 people sitting behind driver. We have been going about 10.5mph is this too fast? Some of us are 180lbs to 200lbs. My longest rope free ride has been about 30sec. Help! Thanks!

mine is good between 9-10, 9.5mph is perfect on my boat, i find when you go faster though its harder to hold the sweet spot, and you have to cruise closer to the swim platform.

i've found that you have to go as slow as you can before the wake washes over, so once the wake shapes up to a nice surf wake slow it down till it washes away, then speed back up and you should find your speed.

We've always gone about 9.3 and it's been good, but last time we were out and I was riding a smaller board I needed to get up to 10.2 before the sweet spot was big enough. Since then I've enjoyed going around 10 on the usual board, as it helps me float better. I'm 200lb, while my friends who are lighter like to go a little slower. Basically, experiement and find what you like!

yeah, add more weight to one side of the boat, or use your spotters to move on that side/corner. also i think 10.5 might be too fast, we only went 8.7mph on my friends x-10. i find the fast the boat goes the harder it is to maintain speed w/ the boat.

I surf from time to time behind a friends 03' X-Star. He throws 2 pretty large sacs in the left side locker, fills the ballast full on the left side and half full on the right. The wake is pretty good. Can't remember how fast we were going, but go whatever speed causes the wake to clean up and the white water to fall to the right side.

I will experiment with the 1/2 ballast setup.I think we may need more sack.Right now the wake/wave is pretty huge.If i was on my long board...cowabunga! The drop is about 2.5-3ft.

I've found that 9.8 mph on my perfect pass gives me the best wake to surf. I have a B52 V3. I started out at 11 mph and dialed it down.

9.8 behind an 05 X-2 with all tanks full and an extra 400 pound tank at the back left. The key is to put two or 3 passengers at the bow of the boat though, to give the wake volume.
