So the new system is going in our Axis this weekend. Ended up ordering a pro 485, Syn 4, XS-12 and a 420. The tower set up is going to be a hybrid set up with the pro 485 and 2 of the factory MTX speakers. Eventually (next spring most likely) the MTX speakers will get replaced with another 485. I talked to Tim at Wet Sounds a bunch before ordering this system and it should sound pretty good until we finish the upgrade next year. Anyways my question is do we need to replace the factory speaker wire that runs to the MTX tower speakers we are going to replace? My brother is worried that it won't be big enough to handle the 400w that will be going to the 485. (personally I think it will be fine) Thoughts?

Sounds like someone has been taking notes from the guys at Exile on the hybrid setup...

I'd do 14 awg minumum with 400watts, what size is the stock wire?

You're going to need 0 gauge OFC to each speaker.

No, I'm kidding. Get some 12awg from monoprice, and you'll be good to go. I got the CL2 rated. It's $30 for 100ft.

Not sure why you'd want to do a hybrid with the 485, that's the best sounding WS speaker they have and there is no way those MTX speakers can keep up with that thing.

If the MTX speakers sound like garbage next to it we will just get rid of them. The hybrid set up is just until we can afford to order the other 485. It is more an experiment than anything else at this point. I have no idea what size the stock wire is. I will check and make sure we have at least 14 awg. If we don't we will just get some 12 awg and call it good.

The eventual system will be 2 485s, XS-650s in the boat, XS-12 under the helm. Syn 4 pushing the 2 485s and a Syn 6 pushing the in boats and sub. Just piecing it all together at this point.

like said above 12 awg is a must for the 485.You should be fine till next year with the mtx speakers as you wont be able to hear them anyways.I just installed a set of 485's pushed by an ARC 300.4 and they are OH MY GOD loud.

Okay the pro 485 is mounted. We are most likely going to take off the MTX speakers. The factory wires are 14awg but we ordered some 12awg to replace it. Here is a picture of the progress.
