how do you tell if you are using a non stretch rope? I got it for $40 and it came with the rope and a handle. If it helps the handle it came with is called the power grip by HydroSlide i think. Since then, I replaced it with a non-strech wakeboard handle with a spectra line. I pull on both the spectra handle and the mainline, and they feel just a little diffrent. I imagine I'm using a low-strech rope but I have no idea how to tell if it streches besides pulling on it. I've never ridden with a rope that I was 100% sure it was spectra. Is there anyway to tell for sure if it is strechy? Sorry for the long post.

test you can do is to pinch two parts of the line approx a couple inches apart, and then press the line together into itself, then release one hand and if the line springs back to its original position then it has stretch. However if it doesn't bounce back and stays when you release it then it doesn't have stretch. My guess is if you paid $40 it is nylon and has stretch. Very rarely will you find a good spectra line for under $75 unless its used or something. Generally you can expect to pay like $80-110 for a good line, thats not even including the handle. The good new is that they generally last a while. Hope this helps, if you don't understand the pinch and push technique let me know and I'll try to explain it a different way.

You can usually get a new spectra rope on Ebay for $30-50.

I got a new Masterline "Microfusion" spectra rope and handle for $65 a while back.

The neoprene-core ropes, like the one David D mentioned, are cool because they float but they are not truly "tangle free" and probably aren't worth the extra money if you're on a budget.

One other piece of advice...try and get a bright color so you can see it easily in the water. It may save you..or more likely someone driving your boat when you're boarding from running over the rope.
