Ok heres the deal, I am looking at purchasing either a new 2007 Supra 21V or a 2005 left over demo X-Star. Both boats will have new finance options and full factory warranty. And both will be very similar in specs and very close in price. I think both boats are great and will by far out perform my ability. So here is what I am having a hard time with. Which boat will depreciate faster or should I say lose me more money when I decide to get a different boat in 2-3 years. The mastercraft has already taken its initial hit, but it is 2 years older to so maybe it will be depreciating faster. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

I think anytime you buy new it will depreciate faster and the tax factor! The used one like you said has already taken the big hit...so it should be slower from here.....also you won't get as good a deal on the 2007 because of it being a new hot model....the mastercraft is a demo.....so my 2 cents is the mastercraft would lose less.....all other things being equal.

ya, the initial hit of it already being two years old helps. Plus its an x-star. And I would think an xstar would hold its value much more than a supra.

The thing to consider is the supra you can load up with whatever options you want, where the xstar is already set up and you would have to go and add more.

Let us know what you decide and upload pics. I own a Supra but if I had the money, I'd get an XStar. And I love my Supra.
But there is some sort of "mystique" with an XStar.

I would think the xstar would depriciate a lot slower now than the Supra. The Supra being new will take a hit when you drive it(pull it)off the lot, as were the star is already taken it. Its unfortunate, because Supra builds a very nice boat, but just the fact that its an Xstar will help a geat deal with re-sale.

Like Ronia, I own a Supra but if I had the money I'd get an x-star. Wouldn't even think twice.

"The mastercraft has already taken its initial hit, but it is 2 years older to so maybe it will be depreciating faster"

Boats will depreciate at a decreasing rate over time to. Rule of thumb is usually 15-20% the first year (off sticker).

Colby - I'm sure you've ridden behind both a 21v and an X-Star to make that conclusion, correct? Or was it just your friend's brother's ex-girfriends godmamma that told you?

To me that is like comparing a mercedes to a nissan. Both are a great product, but one is much better in every aspect. (x-star)IMO

I look at all the “educated” answers you are getting and I wonder just how good they really are. Do they know how each boat is loaded and what options they have, what motors are in each and what prop is being used, base vinyl or syntec knit back 360 stretch vinyl w/ stain resistant topcoat, double up flip up seats on the playpin or walk thru bow, swivel or standard board racks, dual battery, pop-up cleats or base, how much and how the ballast is laid out in each boat and what kind of wake each is producing with it, if it has a 6 disc CD changer with IPOD hook-ups, dose it have a bimini or can you get a Z5 cargo rack for it, 2pc bow & cockpit cover or tonneau cover, adjustable hydraulic wake plate, tandem axle trailer w/ disc breaks, 10” subwoofer & amp? And what do they know about you? What lake you are on, who do you do your boating with and how much equipment you normally have with you?

Find “YOUR” boat, not what everyone on the board wishes or wants!!! The only time you should ask, “what boat do you think” is to your wife if you are married, or to the person you are going to buy a boat for as a gift. Are you buying this boat for YOU or everyone who post an answer, because if so I would like for you to buy me a Chris Craft.

1) TEST DRIVE & RIDE!!! Find out how each boat drives and performs on the water. Then make sure YOU do some riding behind each to see what wake SHAPE works best for YOUR riding level, style, and makes it easier for YOUR learning progression.
2) What interior layout and size best fits YOUR boating style, needs & wants? This is also the time to look at every detail to see the quality in each boat and how they compare.
3) List out all the options that are on each boat and highlight the one(s) YOU like over the other and see what boat has the most features YOU like. Compare your apples to apples, and what one(s) has a better tast to YOUR taste buds.
4) This is YOUR boat purchase, so take the time to find YOUR boat, because it doesn’t matter what I are anyone else thinks, what it cost, or what it's worth if YOU’R not happy with YOUR boat.

I so hate having people ask, "What boat should I buy?" Only you can answer that once you really take the time to do your research to find a boat with the layout and options that fit YOUR needs and wants in a boat, not someone else wants you to buy.

As for me, I think you would look super cool in a 27’ Chris Craft. That boat is top notch, and holds great resale value. Now that's being sarcastic...

Patrick – You said, “To me that is like comparing a mercedes to a nissan. Both are a great product, but one is much better in every aspect. (x-star)IMO”

How did you come up with this??? Are you basing this off manufactures built specs? Maybe a listing of vendors of materials and equipment that are being used in each boat and what quality they are? Could be from the over all craftsmanship and quality of each boat that would reflect currant #’s of boats being produced and sold and their market share percentages and or they have increased or decreased in market share over the last few years?

No really Patrick, where did you come up with this?

you can't be serious with this comparison can you? I've voiced my opinion on the 21v in past posts. So I won't focus on the negatives of this boat. The xstar requires a ton of weight and handles like a pig at the best of times. It's still no contest when comparing the two. X-star no contest

from seeing older MC's and older Supra's it seems to me that MC's will hold up better over the years compared to Supras. It wont fall apart at the hinges and seams. nothing extreme has changed cosmetically on the xstar since then so even if they change in the future it will still look the same as the 07. I would look into all the specs and drive them and see which fits better to you and once you make your decision just keep it clean and keep up maintanance and you shouldnt have a problem getting a couple pennies back. best of luck and let us know which you chose! thank you

The law of economics at work again. If a left over 2005 Demo X-Star is the same price as a brand new off the showroom floor Supra, there is a reason, and I should not have to say why. Also, who cares about the increase of market share. Quality is a different measurement than quantitiy. Just like there are more Toyota Camrys sold than Cadillac's. Both will get you from point a to point b, but two different ways. IMO, X-Star no comparison....

X-star, hands down

you guys are funny.....
not saying I would not like an X star.... great boat, but you guys are saying X star hands down and you know no facts.
#1 anyone that says depreciation on a new boat will be greater MIGHT be right, but it all depends what you pay for a boat. You and I may have the same boat, but I can guarantee we will not pay the same price, so yes one might take a bigger hit on depreciation, but if you buy smart than no. I have bought new Supra's the last 3 years and have not lost money....
#2 Sure the Xstar might be a more popular boat and to some a better boat, but this a a demo boat. Do we have more details? often times demo boats are ridden hard and put away wet. Need to have more details to answer the question
#3 if Supra is a Nissan and will not hold up then why is Skiers Choice growing at larger percentage than MC? Cause they make crappy boats? I doubt it. Why do Skiers Choice and Mastercraft use many of the same materials, motors, build process, etc.
#4 options options options.... we don't know what each of these boats have so how can we compare? We have not seen either boat so how can we compare?

It might sound like I am trying to stick up for Supra, and in some respects, I am, but this would hold true if I were not a Supra owner. The reality is I would love an X Star. I also love Supra. I like the Supra wake. I like the build quality, and very important I like my dealer. You really need to know what boat YOU like better and what is a better boat for YOU and your family and friends. Mastercraft makes awesome boats (probably one of the best). Supra makes awesome boats (also amongst the best, but nowadays they are all awesome). Pick YOUR boat and there is no way you can make a wrong decision here. Good luck to you!
Good luck to you!!!

first off i think you should buy whats more appealing to your eye, not everyone elses, but also wouldnt it make more since to buy a boat that is the same price, and that is new, with the options that you want . instead of buy a two year old used boat that might not be eqquipped the way you want that is used for the price of the new supra.

just me

Seriously, it is impossible to make a decision based on your info. Sight unseen I'd take the new Supra but if the X-Star was well maintained, properly broken in, not excessivley loaded down, has minimal hours and generally kept in good condition I'd be all over the X-Star. Its an incredible boat, and if it is in great shape then a better buy in my book. I will never buy a new boat, the economics of it are retarded. Buy a two year boat with 80 hours on it and let some other sucker take the huge depreciation hit. There are so many barely used boats out there that you can find a smokin deal with a little patience and dedication. I like the Supra wake but the X-Star is ridiculous(in a good way)!

Here is an opinion. MASTER CRAFT SUCKS!!!! That's my opinion. Buy the Supra. I don't care about the return responce, I hate Master Craft boats. Useless information I know, but I feel better. Thanks.

IMO, I would go with the Supra. My reason is I like the wake on the supra better that the X-star. Now if you are goin to put 4000lbs in it every time you ride, than the X-star is the way to go. If not I say Supra. I don't like a super rampy wake, and if the X-star does not have a few sacks and a S*** load of lead, thats what it has. Not sayin anything bad about the boat, I just don't like the wake. I'd take a X1, BU, or a Supra over it any day. When I buy a boat, I want a wake that "I" like. Not one everyone tells me to like or cuz all the pros ride it.
Old     (kcsideways)      Join Date: Jun 2004       10-17-2006, 9:29 AM Reply
So mdiddy...you "know" what hit you took on your last 21V...not huge...I'm assuming you came out pretty well. Do you like a boat that's 1) brand new per your color/option specifications, 2) full manuf. warranties, 3) a known entity since you had one previously, 4) the latest design/styling from Supra, and 5)knowing that you will break-in the motor and know how it has been taken care of...Supra it is.

Now if the X-Star has that allure of "it's and X-Star"...go for it...you are not giving up anyting with the Supra, gaining IMHO.

I ask all that are overly concerned with re-sale...why is an '05 promo X-star still available fall of '06 and why has it lost somewhere in the neighborhood of 25%-30% of the original retail value and still hasn't retailed yet?

Tough decision...you know how to contact me if I can be of further help.

I agree with Jamie. Dont ask a online forum to pick your boat. That is just the dumbest thing ever. Its just to many factors that only you can anwser. Thats like asking a open automobile forum "should i buy a Chevy or a Ford". Lets get real.

I see in your profile you got the Supra. How do you like your new boat?

stop typing and go drive the boat. both of them.

I don't think Supra's are taking the same depreciation these days, even the new ones off the showroom floor. The Supra has a much better stock wake. I don't see how anyone who has ridden both can argue this. Isn't that what we buy the boats for? The nice wakes to wakeboard?
