Have a friend that needs to replace the water pump on their 1999 Malibu Response with a 5.7 indmar EFI.

Dealer quoted like $700 for the pump. Can we go to Napa and just get a pump there?

Any help would be appreciated

Napa should have a marine water pump. As long as it is the proper application for the 5.7 it will work just fine.

Anyone have a part number to make sure?

Take off the old water pump and just take it in to NAPA, that's your only sure shot way. Part numbers can change over time so someone on here can give you a part number and it may be the wrong one or an out dated one.

Be careful using anything AUTOMOTIVE. I've seen people run automotive fuel lines and many other things in older boats and it's highly unsafe not to mention if you ever get pulled over by the coast guard or anyone related you will be cited and probably kicked off the water if your engine has certain automotive parts.

Thanks for the pointers!

Have a great weekend. Off to Napa tomorrow

I would RUN from that dealer and never go back...EVER!! That's maybe a 1/2 hour job on a direct drive taking your time and having a couple of beers in the process. Actually, I would first tell them they are rip off / con artists and it is awful that they think that is even close to a fair price.

Pump is $160 from Bakes: http://bakesonline.com/detail.aspx?ID=773

Let's say the dealer somehow marks up the pump to $200, claims an hour labor @ $85 and has another $15 is misc stuff (gasket, shop towels, whatever). That's a $300 job tops, and honestly an easy job to do in your driveway yourself. Go tell them to f' themselves and never go back.

but Nitro, don't they have to take out like 10 bolts, take the old pump off, put the new one on, and replace all the bolts?

Raw water pump or circulating pump? Fresh water cooled? That takes time and disposal / capture and or replacement of coolant.

The Napa marine circ pump will be by-directional and have a SS impeller. ( It will be a Sierra most likely)

Go to Depco for raw water pump parts.

That motor will be lake water cooled so no coolant. Besides, even if it was partial closed cooling, do you think it should cost anywhere approaching another $400 to handle that. MAYBE $100 with labor, disposal, and additional coolant.

I still don't know which pump it is. There are two. And his wording leads one to think that the 700 was the price of parts only. That is very difficult to swallow and leads me to suspect the accuracy of the hearsay.
In my experience these sort of third person price gouging threads die under their own weight because the poster neglected to mention the other services on the invoice.

Usually it's: While its in here for the water pump do an oil change, the batteries are dead, the windscreen wipers slap out of tempo and the toilet is stopped up. 700$ for a water pump ?!?! Outrageous!

Usually anyways. Maybe Im wrong and the shop needs the poster to make a rent payment.

Price seemed high, thus I am helping out with the alternatives... Thanks for the pointers!
