Engine Oil

Probably a dumb question-Getting ready to change my oil. 2000 Moomba Mobius V, Indmar 330 HP EFI, 5.7L...The Indmar manual says 15W-40 Pennzoil marine oil but I can't find it. The Moomba manual says 10W-40 oil is okay, which is what I bought. Will Pennzoil 10W-40 be okay?? Thanks

yeah its ok but try to find the 15-40 for next time, go with engine mfgrs recommendation.

Walmart normally carries the 15W40 Marine grade oil.

You can also choose a good brand of diesel oil it will most likely meet or exceed the spec

I can't find the 15W40 at Wal-Mart, all they have is 2 cycle outboard Pennzoil...does O'Reilly or Autozone carry it?

Have you checked at a marina?

if u have a west marine in ur area they carry it. about 13 a gallon

Not really close to a marina. I read somewhere else that Shell Rotella 15W40 is equivalent and will work...any experience?

Blah blah blah...just use 10/40, it simply has a lower cold weather rating. There is not a lot of science in dino oil, all things considered. In fact there are only so many companies producing it, most is just re-branded. Same thing with batteries.

FYI at running temps, the oil thickness on a 15-40, 10-40, or a traight 40 will be about the same or similar. 15W-40 means the oil is a 15W that will not thin more than a 40W at the same temps. Brands do not matter. The test are done the same, and are very innacurate. They use a slope flow method.

Wal Mart sells a synthetic in a 5-quart container for $14.00. It exceeds the spec and works great. NAPA also sells a cheap synthetic and the NAPA Gold oil filter exceeds marine spec. Inexpensive as well.

Note: regardless of the printed weight - almost all synthetic oil meets the spec from 5W-50W. As long as you have normal oil pressure, use whatever you have good access to.

Shell Rotella is a good conventional oil. I like synthetics better. Not a big deal as long as you keep the oil clean and clear.

Tip: Use Chevron Techron every 3-4 tank of fuel. It keep the valves clear and will keep the engine running better and cleaner. Also cheap.

I don't feel anyone will realize the benefits of synthetic with regular winterization and oil changes with a towboat. The benefit of the dino oil for the startups would make it the better options.

Many places keep the 15W-40 with the diesel oil.

Go to Sam's Club or Costco and buy Chevron Delo 400 a.k.a. 15w-40, I paid $55.00 for 4 gallons.

I got 15W-40 from Advanced Auto Parts. It is in the diesel section. That is what goes in most diesel engines.

use marine synthetic only. It is made to withstand way more than regular oils. If you do find the oil you want make sure that you but extra for your next oil change that way you dont have to hunt around for it. I bought two filters and a case of volvo synthetic oil when I bought my boat so I was prepared. For winterization you can probably use any oil because you wont run the boat untill you change it after winter again so all it is doing is occupying space, and all motor oils are compatable with synthetic so the little that will be left in there is no big deal.

Why would anyone put new oil in their motor in the fall to sit in the bottom of the oil pan during the winter only to be drained out and tossed in the spring?
