How many hours should I be concerned with on a used boat?

My uncle owns a marina in New Orleans that was wiped out from Hurricane Katrina. He had 350 engines that went under water and he got them running again. He says they should last at least 3000 hours. I would be concerned with anything from 1500 and up. My dad's malibu has 980 hours, and my nautique has 1300. Both are still running strong. One good thing about high hours is that you know the owner took pretty good care of the engine if it made it that far. The only problem is that things break after time, and you never really know when it will happen.
