The 17-40 F4L is an awesome lens. I used one for a few weeks while my 16-35 f2.8 was at Canon getting fixed (a little run-in with some water...). The 17-40 was awesome, and it's a lot cheaper than the 16-35. Plus, it's still an L series, so you're getting Canon's best quality glass and the highest autofocus performance.

I decided to buy a used Canon 17-40 for $100 more over a new Tamron. Canon definitely holds its value.

I purchased the Tokina AT-X PRO SD 12-24 F4 (IF) DX for my Canon 20D. It has done a good job for me.

That Tokina is for APS-C size sensors only. I assumed Rick was interested in a WA zoom that was usable on all Canon bodies since the 3 he asked about are. If we're talking zooms for crop sensors then you've got to talk about both the Tamron and Canon 17-55 f2.8's. These are both superior to the 3 he asked about. One has to be real careful with 3rd party lenses these days if you own (or ever plan to own) a 1 series or 5D. Many of them come with full EF mounts but work only with the 1.6 crop sensors.

The tokina 12-24 will work on full frame cameras, however it's not real usable below 17-18. At least thats what I have been told. The mirror does clear though

Actually if you've ever owned a ful frame sensor like the 5D 18mm would be super wide.

Rich, I realize that and that is my point. the tokina is usable on a full frame camera, and therefore not a reason to not buy it if you plan to move to full frame.

How is that lens compared to the sigma 12-24 which will work on a FF? Do you have the tokina? I haven't owned any Tokina lenses to date, I know they are built like a tank. When it comes to third party lenses usually the IQ is pretty good, it's the AF speed I'm always worried about. Although AF speed on a super wide isn't usually a big deal.

Rich, I own the tokina and love it. I can't compare to the sigma as I have never used it. The af speed is not real fast like the canon "L's" but plenty fast for a wide angle. It would be slow on a telephoto, though. IMO the IQ on the tokina is excellent.

I have tamron and canon lenses. I still have not been able to tell the difference in my shots between the 2. I would save the money and go with the tamron.

I have a Canon 17-40 F4L. Good lens with fast focus. Like 16-35 2,8F. My opinion Canon is better choice than other lenses.
