i was going to go pickup a float charger/battery charger this weekend, but then got to thinking. how do i actually hook this up if i've got a combiner installed? I'm guessing I can only charge one battery at a time, and that's fine, but is there anything else I need to be careful of? also, is there anything special I need to get? Both batteries are AGM optima blue-tops. Please advise-

speaking of chargers

would this be what i'd want for a pair of blue tops?

I believe AGM style batteries like to be charged at higher amperage then wetcell batteries. Trickle type chargers seem to degrade these types of batteries overtime. Check out this site it has really good info on chargers and the maintence of different style batteries http://batterystuff.com/

You should be able to charge both batts at same time with combiner if you charger can handle it. Isnt the idea of a combiner to let one batt. fully charge first then 'combine' both batts.

Put charge on #1 batt and when its charged the combiner will connect #2 so it can charge

i called batterystuff technical

the guy was very helpful

he didn't know for sure if the yandina c100 would actually combine both batteries or not when battery 1 was full. he didn't think it would be enough to trigger the combiner, but he did suggest another product that looks pretty cool and i may go for it instead:

http://www.batterystuff.com/battery-chargers/12-volt/marine-chargers/CT-500-1.html

it will charge both batteries independent of each other at the same time. it has the same type of charging routine as the battery tender and i can permanently mount it in my boat and just plug it in when i'm home. what do you guys think?

I just put the combiner in "not combined mode" and use a battery tender on each. I have a Hellroaring combiner with the optional remote switch.

yeah, i didn't install a togle switch with mine. i had the option, but i didn't have them do it. i am using a bluesea battery switch, but i think i'm just going to bypass that and hook up each harness directly to each battery. i'm thinking this chargetek 500 might be the cats meow. i wonder if anybody here is using one. it would save me from having to buy two battery tenders.

buy an onboard dual bank battery charger, it will work a lot better than a trickle charger. I have a dual 10 amp in parallel with my Hellroaring, added a socket for the extension cord. I just plug it in when I get home, everything is charged up in a couple of hours. I had a single 6 amp, it would not charge both batts overnight. Trickle chargers are a waste of money.

Oh yeah, you can put a charger on your battery that is connected to the alternator directly and when it reaches full charge the Hellroaring will turn on and allow the second battery to charge. It just takes too long.
