These riders who have helped make our sport what it is today didn't make it thru qualifying:
Zane Schwenk
Gerry Nunn
Ricky Gonzales
Chris Law
Dean LaVelle

What if Shaun Murray had a bad day, sure would have ticked me off if he wasn't riding on tour.

altho' i see your point thats its a shame they're no longer gettin thro' you've gotta admit, they've had a seriously long innings compared to most sports people. take an athelete, they get to do 2-3 olympics, (except your carl lewis or our stephen redgrave), but they've been at it years, its about time the new talent came through to make the original trix even more innovative (refering to soven!! damn what he's doing is awesome).

no doubt i'll get some debate over this....

So are the top 10 riders from last years tour automatically in the tour this year? I didn't see those names in the qualifying this year.

Anyone know where I can find the wakeskating results?

Craig, I couldn't agree with you more. 1 per heat just isn't enough.

So is the top 15 automaticaly qualifying a way to have a pro wakeboard tour without sponsors of those big names going crazy and boycotting the event?! I mean at this stage in the game, not very big sport, shouldn't everyone have to start from square one every year?! Last year was last year, if you want praise and crap then that was LAST YEAR! Winners of professional sports like baseball, basketball, and football don't get some kind of special privledge the next year.. as they shouldn't. They got theyre chance to shine and if they want that chance again they have to earn it all over again.

I don't think you can compare team sports like baseball, basketball, and football to wakeboarding. The qualifying process seems harsh but you do have to reward the top guys on the tour the prior year. It would seem crazy to win the tour one year and then not even get to compete the next year.

This whole process runs a lot like the PGA tour. The top guys stay and the rest go through qualifying every year...it seems to work out alright that way.

Paul, In NASCAR you can get a provisional spot based on your previous wins.

Surfing seeds the top 16(?). Alot of sports seed top performers from the previous year. That said 1 from each heat seems harsh. Maybe taking the top X qualifiers with based on an average score for 2 (or more) runs would be better. Sux to have Murray and Bonzales in the same heat and onlytake one. I'm sure Ricky could've taken down first in one of the other heats.

I agree with the format that the top 15 shouldn't have to qualify, but other should have more than one chance a year to do it.

Congrats to Josh Palma, but it really sucks that some really good riders didnt make it.

If the top 15 are automaticaly qualifying, then why is Shane and Watson and Soven riding? Are they not in the top 15?
Old     (juiced4ever)      Join Date: Oct 2005       05-05-2006, 12:09 PM Reply
I think the pro tour seeding and qualifying should be done on a point bases through the wwa. A rider would ride the outlaw tourney's across the country racking up points. These points are what would determine who qualifies for the pro tour. And at all the pro tour stops the first day of qualifying would have heats of the outlaw riders. I dont know just a thought. Not to big on contest myself.

If 15 didnt have to qualify and 16 will qualify how are there 58 people who got points in the PWT?

You forgot Shapiro. He has done more for the sport than most.

I read a caption in the newest Alliance for a picture of Shapiro and it pretty much said that it would probably be one of the last photos of Shapiro riding, I know he has been having back problems, but is he done riding for photo shoots (I am sure he will still be teaching)?

Last years top 16 did not have to qualify on Thursday. There were 16 heats with 6 - 7 each on Thursday. Top rider from each heat qualified for this years tours. There are 4 (I think) wildcards that the tour sponsors can name bringing the total to 36. The list of participants will grow as the year moves ahead, if someone gets hurt or fails to register on time they will be replaced.

That's why LF inked the deal with Shapiro, because he's gonna fade out, but Ride The Spot is gonna be going strong slangin' the LF stuff. Good move.

That picture in Alliance of Shapiro is sick. He's showin' some serious steez. Indy shifty.

Here's how it works...

The top 16 riders from last year qualify automatically and are seeded based on the final 2005 Pro Tour rankings.

The top 16 riders from yesterday's qualifying rounds are also seeded (17-32) based on the final 2005 Pro Tour rankings. If a rider didn't ride on the Pro Tour last year, they are seeded in alphabetical order.

This year, the competition if fully head-to-head. That means that the lowest seeded rider (Aaron Rathy according to my calculations) will start the day by going head to head with the top seeded rider (Josh Sanders). Seed #2 will take on seed #31 and so on in a tournament style format until one rider beats everyone he faces.

For the first event in Georgia this weekend, anybody that wanted to sign up for pro men was able do so and they rode in the qualifier yesterday. I believe there were about 80 riders. Even if 1000 riders had signed up, they could still only take 16 for this weekend's event, so that just would have meant bigger heats and more competition. Unfortunately, because of the huge number of competitors, there will always be some "big names" that don't qualify.

For those riders that did not make it through qualifying, they are encouraged to sign up for the rest of the Pro Tour stops because if someone who did qualify doesn't show up to one of the subsequent stops (and there are usually half a dozen or so that don't show for various reasons), they will take the next seeded rider (based on the same seeding as described above) from the second place qualifying finishers and allow them to take that spot. In this case, it would be Keith Lidberg because he is the highest seeded rider of the second place finishers in qualifying. If the rider doesn't get in, they get their money back.

According to my rough calculations (certainly not official), here is the ranking of the top 16 non-qulifying riders that could fill an open spot at the next tour stop.

Keith Lidberg
Jonathan Nadolski
Kyle Rattray
Scotty Broome
Jesson Vedel
Chris Law
Adam Fields
Marcelo Giardi
Gerry Nunn
Collin Wright
Clay Fletcher
Mike Marsh
Sean O'Brien
Travis Propst
Justin Savich

If this list is exhausted and there is still room for more riders, they would then rank the third place finishers from yesterday's qualifying and so on.

In addition, each tour stop will have a mini-qualifier dubbed the challenge round where four additional pro riders will have a chance to qualify for each event.

Hopefully that answers all your questions.

Soven didn't ride yesterday.

Not sure what happened to Lyman.

All the pro men qualifying is done. Today they're doing Pro Women and Jr. Men.

There are 58 ranked from last year because some pros don't go to all the events, which allows others to get in on some of them and they all end up with a ranking.

7 of last years top 20 Jr. men didn't qualify for the tour this year. 62 riders going for 16 spots.

Well I guess I can understand the top guys last year staying but not 15 of them! Why reward them this year... It's a year by year deal of whos the best, not a whos done good consistantly! These guys that do good every year are used to it and perform well under pressure when if not under pressure these young guns could kill half of them. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone but I feel that might really be the case. Let everyone start new every year.. makes EVERYONE better. It's just as dissapointing for an 8 year pro to not qualify as a new pro that knows hes better then half the folks that 'beat' him on the first qualifying.
Old     (wakeriderixi)      Join Date: Jan 2004       05-05-2006, 3:24 PM Reply
I supose you can't win either way..... I know i'd bitch of one of the top pros didn't make it but alot of young guns with a 'one hit wonder' pass made it. Whatever the case someone will always be of luck!
