yeah.. I saw that like ages ago. ;-)

The BTS stuff was cool. I wish I had a helicopter.

I think we even get a glimpse of our fellow wakeworlder Mike Isler @ 1:00...?

I don't understand. Are they using a still camera with video capabilities?
Old     (dcervenka)      Join Date: Sep 2002       09-23-2008, 5:04 PM Reply
yes... The new Nikon and Canon both provide video recording capabilities.

The video you see in the first link was shot entirely on the *new* Canon 5d "still camera" with this functionality. Pretty cool!

Of course... talent, vision, and budget not included. ;-)

Sipping Louis XIII congac on his terrace overlooking Manhattan, flying with acrobatic stunt planes, spending countless hours shooting from a heli, hanging with ridiculously good looking models, getting to play with pre-production releases of siCk gear, and the list just keeps going on...

Where do I apply?

Joe, Ryan has a big bag on Nikon glass, don't see him switching to the dark side anytime soon.

Hahah, yes, that definition is almost spot-on, except lately my preference has been leaning toward single malt Scotch.. Balvenie being the current favorite. And I'm about to move to a place without a terrace with a view! Such a shame.

Kyle- a lot of what I do is working with a commercial photographer whose specialty is aerials. So, I do in fact spend a bit of time in helicopters. It's like normal photo assisting, except I also do pre-production, safety rigging for harnesses and gear, coordination, etc. I was involved with every shot in that movie, but aerial tech sounded better than "assistant" =).

Also, that camera mount is just a hodgepodge of parts I have in a milk crate. It's 3 different (random) Avenger suction cups, a ballhead, 2 magic arms, and a few knuckles to connect things. The cups are about $60 each or so, and the rest just random Bogen/Manfrotto parts.

DPC- when you rolling through NYC next? I've had my few random visits with you in SoCal.. your turn..

Not soon enough... :-( I'm going to be overseas twice in the next few months, so hopefully once the dust settles I can make it out your way (after the new year)! It's on my very long TO DO list...

Mike, do you mind me asking where you got the suction cups.

Also, how do you like living in New York? I am currently applying to two grad schools there. (sorry for the hijack)

Here are the three that I used:

B&H's page on Suction Cups has several options...

Including some nice 10" cups.

Joe, what video format does that capture in? AVCHD? That's a nice camera.

Waylon, I believe it's in h264 .mov files. Drag and drop into FCP...
Old     (dcervenka)      Join Date: Sep 2002       09-24-2008, 3:48 PM Reply
From the press release that scott posted:

"Video clips are recorded in .MOV format using an MPEG-4 video compression and sound is recorded using linear PCMii without compression."
Old     (richd)      Join Date: Oct 2003       09-24-2008, 7:08 PM Reply
Interesting, h264 takes a lot of processor to compress while it's relatively easy to decompress.

Is this using a separate chip or the digic4 I wonder.

AVCHD is an mpeg4 family based codec if I'm not mistaken but it's not drag and drop into FCP at this point unless they're ignoring the conversion to the AIC or Prores codecs that AVCHD currently requires.

Anyone practiced rack focusing their DSLR lately?
