Thinking of getting my parents each a portable nav system. My mom especially drives quite a bit all around the US with East Texas as home base.

Any recommendations on particular units for a couple of - umm - tech-challenged 60 year olds?

agree with joe if they have smart phones the navi system is obsolete. that said i have a garmin nuvi 765. i like it ok. i would suggest getting a larger screen model(4.3) inches. this will make the keyboard easier to operate and maps easier for them to see. my parents(same age as yours) have a tom tom. not sure what series and they seem to like that. the only issue with the navigation systems is the maps need to be updated every couple of years which can be expensive(about 100 bucks) and if they are tech challenged then you will probably be the one that has to update them.

I've got a garmin 4.5 inch or so. My truck doesn't have a built in nav. I used it on a trip over the summer to the grand canyon and monument valley - worked great - really nice to see where you're at on the highway and it has a blackout feature so at night it's not overly bright.

My mom is the same age and I bought her one of these about 4 years ago and she loves it. I just bought her another one for her birthday because the old one had obsolete maps. So, whatever you do, make sure that the one you buy has lifetime updates on maps.

If they have a IPad or a Iphone, there is no need for a seperate Nav system. Buy the Tom Tom software for $30 or $40 and you can load it on both phones. Maybe set them up on a Itunes account so they can update. All the maps are downloaded to the device so it only needs the GSP signal. Love mine.

I just bought one for my parents tonight. I hope they like it. I bought the dumbest garmin they had in the store.

I was shocked how expensive some of those things were. $500

She'll love it. the Garmin's are very intuitive. We used them for a our limo drivers when we had that company (and they weren't always the sharpest tools in the shed). They were great and very easy to update.
